We had a disappointing experience and very distasteful customer service from the staff. My husband picked up a piece of furniture and was treated very poorly by the staff. They were unnecessarily rude, miserable and repeatedly insisted that they do not help with the lifting—despite the fact that my husband never asked for help. Their tone was short, snotty and very unfriendly. The interaction felt unwelcoming and disrespectful. Customer service matters, especially in a consignment shop, and unfortunately this experience fell far short.
I recently had a piece of furniture, a teak wall unit, I wanted to sell and contacted Bits and Pieces. I'd sold some teak furniture through them years ago and hoped they would accept this item also. My situation was a little different this time, the piece was in a house I owned in KW, but I now live a 2 1/2 hour drive way. They did accept the wall unit and were also very accommodating in making arrangements to have us bring the item outside of their regular drop off times, due to my distance from the store. As a past consigner, I would recommend Bits and Pieces to anyone who has good quality used furniture they no longer need. I found them very good to deal with years ago when I consigned with them and this time was no different.
Don't buy anything that's on the second floor! This store will do nothing whatsoever to help the customer and the staff member broke the drawer on what we bought. My husband and I found a small tv stand and it was located on the second floor of the store. The store has a policy that they cannot help you with loading your purchases into your vehicle which is totally reasonable, most stores require customers to load things themselves for liability reasons. I expected to be able to come back after we purchased it and pick it up from the loading dock. Nope! We had to carry it through the other furniture for sale on the floor, down the stairs and to our car. The staff member said we should come back with more help and we really should hire movers. She said it would only be about $100-$150. Well the piece only cost $180!! No thank you on nearly doubling the price. It really wasn't that big or heavy so my husband and I decided to just carry it then. She seemed upset that we were doing it ourselves and she unilaterally decided to take the drawers out of it after we had already bought it. She hovered over us and got in the way as we were carrying it through the store. I understand she might have been worried about us damaging something else but then they should have staff available to take it to the loading dock if they are worried. When we got home the drawer wouldn't go back in and the glides no longer worked properly. I've bought several pieces from this store over the years. It's very hit or miss but if you are willing to check in often you can find some nice things. I generally like supporting a small, independently owned store instead of a big chain. But there are drawbacks to a place like this, they simply don't have the staff to provide reasonable customer service. If you find a really nice piece of furniture make sure you factor in the cost of movers to the price because the staff is useless and frankly harmful. UPDATE: The drawers are NOT fully functional because your staff member took them out without our permission. They will not go back in and we have to pay to put new slides in. As you said the store doesn't own the furniture... yet YOU decided to take the drawers out and they are broken because of your decision. If you buy from this place be aware that the staff will only deflect when they screw up instead of apologizing.
Could immediately tell I was speaking to the owner (without her telling me) who was condescending and didn’t seem at all optimistic about the nice piece of furniture I was considering selling with them. Repeatedly emphasized the “can’t guarantee” (I get it - there’s a good chance I won’t get the price I “want”) and tried to criticize me for having the item posted elsewhere online (which I clearly explained would NOT be the case if I was committed to selling with them which is why I wanted information right away. No commitment at all had yet been made, just inquiry). Added a star because after I became stern (initially starting off very warmly) and clearly established I would not be spoken to haughtily, she responded with a pause and was civil for the rest of the conversation (which she clearly needed to try hard to do; I could tell general warmth/friendliness took a lot of effort and restraint). I sense that she has received enough of this same feedback from others that she caught herself and reeled in her tone, which I commend. Just a note that your entire business relies upon clients bringing in furniture for YOU to profit from, so it’s really not in good taste or your best interests to talk down to them. On par with the other reviews: workers are friendly (spoke to a woman on the phone yesterday who was lovely); owner is difficult. Would be much better removing herself from direct customer service and operating only as a business owner. Clearly some unresolved bitterness there that trickles into everyday social interactions. Hoping this review is taken into consideration for positive changes to be made, both from within and to the business. Can guarantee client + customer relations/business would improve dramatically if basic kindness and consideration were exercised. May you find healing🙏
