I think the pastries are definitely very aesthetically pleasing and do taste quite good but Ariscault has better pastries and no wait. I’m not sure if I would get in line an hour before opening just to wait even longer again. The workers were very sweet though and I enjoyed watching the croissants get made.
Before coming here, know that the lines can be around an hour and a half or more. If you can stomach that, then continue reading. The menu can change, but from my experience, the savory options are more popular and sell out first. Unfortunately, they were gone by the time we reached the front. We arrived five minutes before opening, and the line already had about 100 people. There are pre-order options, but they sell out in about five seconds. The staff was nice enough to come out and let us know what was selling out in case we wanted to leave the line—but nobody is going to leave after waiting an hour. Took us two hours to order. We went with a variety of sweet options, including pistachio cream, peppermint chocolate, gingerbread, and the original classic croissant. All were delicious. The pistachio was especially creamy and had great flavor. I really want to go back and try the savory options, but I might have to get there around 7:30 a.m. for better chances. One thing that didn’t sit right with me was when the cashier told me there was a limit of 10 pastries per group, even though my friend and I ordered separately. She implied we couldn’t get more than 10 total, despite placing separate orders. So be strategic if you’re going with a group and want more than 10 pastries. Inside is small and cozy, with a large area in the back where they prep and bake. People wait inside for their orders, which doesn’t take too long. You can also see part of the pastry-making process happening in front of you. They have fun little decorations and other beverages to enjoy, if you’re into that sort of thing.
I was lucky enough to score a small pre-order box for pick up today (4 pastries total) and WOW! It did NOT disappoint! The store is normally closed on Wednesdays, but, they do drop occasionally have some pre-orders for pick up on this day. I went at my 10am pick up time and the owner herself answered the door with a smile and welcomed me inside. Everything was SO delicious! My sister and I shared the Chimichurri Short Rib Croissant (it was still warm and so delicious- I absolutely LOVED this savory pastry!). I had the Strawberry & Mascarpone Cruffin later on in the day and it was just as amazing and so flavorful- The jam inside was incredible! My boyfriend devoured the Twice Baked Caramel Cornbread- and declared it was one of the best pastries he has ever had! We still have the Pistachio Sugar Cardamom Croissant left… Guess I know what we’re having for breakfast tomorrow morning. ;) I will definitely be back and will remember to preorder in advance again! One of the best bakery spots in SF. I’ve been wanting to try it for so long and finally got to it. They have more unique options and variety compared to arsicault. Although croissant is flakier in arsicault, the pistachio and vanilla croissants stand out here. Loved it. Long queue on weekends. Had to wait for more than an hour. Totally worth. Would definitely go again many times.
Don’t listen to the low reviews. I have had croissants from some of France’s most inspired bakers and from the best of patisserie in NYC (Levaine’s / Dominique Ansel) to list only a couple. I get that the lines can be long. I get that the products are limited. But how is that a bad thing toward the product? The product is extraordinary to say the least. I don’t mean to stir the pot by comparing as I’ve had some exceptional croissants in Bay Area like Backhaus / Arsicault / B. Patisserie / Neighbour bakehouse / Tartine - the list goes on! But these guys have some of the most creative combos. Execution of the pastry dough is not only brilliant, but somehow I feel it may be one of the lightest croissants (the base croissant not the filled ones with cream ofc lol!) It is a whole experience - if you’re coming, come with the mindset of enjoying the lineup experience where - chances are - the people in front of you and behind you are either there because they’re partaking in this super viral trend (based on merit and quality!) or they are back because they know it’s worth the wait! The last thing I want to say is that the people who are serving you are excited, very polite and passionate because they believe in their product and they’re proud to be a part of what really has become an Internet sensation.
