Anyone looking for an English tutor who actually understands VCE well and knows how to bring out your best, Mark is the one to go to. He helped me massively through Year 12 English, especially when I didn’t believe in myself or my writing, and never gave up on me. He pushed me to improve without making it overwhelming and helped me learn how to actually think and write clearly, not just memorise for exams. I had the privilege of studying under Dr Mark Lopez for just over a year, and I can honestly say that my academic journey was transformed in ways I never imagined possible. From the very first lesson, it became clear that Mark was not just another tutor – he was the guide, the mentor, and the educator I needed to succeed. He did not feed me formulas; he fed me success. Success which consisted of critical thinking, logical reasoning, and rational discourse analysis, just to name a few. These were the perfect ingredients for what I call the ‘Literacy Revolution’ or ‘The Great Enlightening’. I was no longer bound by what my teacher thought about the film or text. I was no longer merely thinking; rather, I was ruminating. The words in the book and the scenes in the film were no longer just words or scenes – they were messages revealing the author’s intent, their political statements, and their critiques or endorsements of the world. I was able to see them, understand them, and critically write about them in my essays. With the help of Mark Lopez, I consistently ranked above my peers, averaging 'A' grades in almost all SACs. Even my teacher was astonished by how I was able to phrase my ideas in such a complex yet simple way. Each essay guided the reader through my thinking and directly addressed the prompt question, all thanks to the teachings of Dr Mark Lopez. However, Mark’s lessons went deeper than academics alone. His teaching affected me on a personal level as well. I was fortunate enough to have Mark as my English tutor for Year 12 and my biggest regret was that I was not able to find him earlier. Mark is a brilliant teacher who imparts years' worth of knowledge and experience to his students in each lesson. His approach to teaching goes incredibly in depth and his notes contain all the intricate nuances of each and every VCE text that regular high school teachers seem to miss. Mark was able to reassure me that my work was of decent quality and that I didn't have to write slop to produce intelligent and thoughtful essays. I know that I will be able to use what he has taught me throughout my tertiary education and into my adult life, and for that I am truly grateful. I do not know what I would have done this year for English without his help.
