I want to be clear that this review is not about the staff or the local office. The employees were professional and did what they could. My issue is with H&R Block’s company-level refund advance program. I understand that H&R Block does not control the IRS or the timing of tax refunds. That is not my complaint. My issue is with how the refund advance (Emerald Advance) is marketed and implemented. The refund advance is promoted as an incentive to use H&R Block’s tax preparation services. During filing, customers are asked whether they want their refund deposited onto an Emerald or Spruce card, with any advance being deducted automatically from the refund before the remaining balance is released to the customer. This repayment method has worked the same way for me in prior years. I was approved for the refund advance every year under the same process. This year, I was denied without a clear or meaningful explanation, even though the authorization, repayment method, and filing approach were unchanged. The purpose of filing early and paying higher preparation fees is specifically to receive the refund advance. If that incentive is inconsistent or uncertain, it no longer functions as a reliable benefit. Paying premium fees while eligibility for an advertised incentive is unpredictable does not make sense as a customer. While I understand the bank ultimately makes the approval decision, H&R Block chooses to partner with and promote this bank as part of its service offering. If approval is outside of H&R Block’s control, then the risk is still placed on the customer after the fees are paid. Because of this experience, I no longer feel confident in the value of H&R Block’s services and will be taking my business elsewhere.
