This place was the BEST!!! From the first phone call to schedule my sons evaluation to the very last day they made me feel so comfortable. My son had been having difficulty and was going to be held back not only did they reassure me that they could catch him up BUT before I knew it he was trying to read everything and anything. I was so nervous because my son can get distracted easily and the thought of him sitting for a long period of time and focusing made me question of this could truly work. Not only did it work he gained major confidence in himself and abilities. He was celebrated on his last night of his session with a certificate that he read aloud. My daughter who was not being tutored even looked forward to picking her brother up for a chance to get a question right and get a sweet treat. Amazing people! Amazing program! It would be a mistake to go to anyone else. Trust me, I did my homework on tutors in the area.
My son has struggled in school since the beginning and was on the verge of being held back in 7th grade. Over the years, I have tried other tutoring programs and have had no success at all. I decided to give Huntington a try as this was my last resort (and by far, the most expensive). My son went 2-3 days a week for about a year and is just about to finish 8th grade. While he is not quite a superstar student, his grades went from Ds and Es in 7th grade, to mostly Bs and Cs, with one D in math. While I would have loved to have seen greater improvements, especially for the cost of ~$18k, this has been the only program that has had any success with my son, and for that I am very happy and grateful for the work they have done with him. If the cost of their program is feasible for your family, this is definitely a great place to help your child excel.
The Virginia Beach Huntington Learning Center located at Nimmo is a disgrace for how a learning facility and business should be conducted. The facilitator puts the fear of God in you as a parent that your child is performing below grade level when you tell them you are interested in building your child's confidence and preparing the child to enter Middle School. They then give you a contract for $8.5k+ explaining how they will supersede your expectations to bring your child up to speed and expect you to agree. Thankfully, I was not that gullible nor delusional. Then they push you to give them more time when things are not working to find a way to challenge your child because come to find out your child is 3+ grade levels ahead working at High School grade level and still requesting to be challenged. Why would any facility feel the need to be so greedy to manipulate a family into thinking their child was behind and then be unable to stand behind their learning processes to support the child and provide a challenge? Needless to say, things did not go as planned and we began questioning what we agreed to for our child. I knew I should have gone with my gut when I started questioning their methods and my child's inability to be heard or challenged. I wish I could say we were the only ones questioning their methods but we witnessed several parents making similar complaints. The owners pushed back that they'd keep tweaking the curriculum, which did not work, and in the end we finally said enough us enough after talking with a teacher who had worked with our child at the learning center. We were both told by the teacher at the facility that they could tell our child was not being challenged and was losing their joy for learning without being challenged and given such mundane, busy work. I do not understand why neither of us were heard when we said this is not working early on in the sessions. Now the facility refuses to refund us for being falsely dragged along with their nonsense curriculum and inability to meet my child's needs to be challenged. I would be happy to pay for services that were contractually agreed upon to meet and exceed the needs of my child. However, our child never received the services we signed up for nor heard when we requested to stop the services due to noncompliance each session. For a gifted child to be told she will be challenged numerous times and never receive the first challenge is not supporting the child nor providing a good business model. The child, whom was originally told they needed services because they were going to struggle in Middle School, has principal's list with all A's and is flourishing in all gifted and advanced classes despite this facility's inability to provide any services requested to challenge our child. You should be ashamed for how you handled this and shaming our child's education John and Shana! If you made it this far reading, then thank you, and I strongly suggest you take caution and consider looking elsewhere when researching a learning facility.
I cannot say enough about Huntington’s Learning Center’s SAT prep course. One child achieved a 800 SAT Math score and another raised his overall test score by 300 points. This directly related to an increase in 40K in scholarships for each. 80k in extra scholarships. Best money I ever spent.
Everyone at Huntington was exceptional. We used their services for ASVAB prep, review and practice testing for my daughter. Focused on Math, but also hit Sciences, Mechanical and technical review. She scored exceptionally well and was able to enlist with the job she wanted. Always helpful, worked with our schedule and eager to help her succeed. Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for educational help with absolutely anything!
