Expecting long lines, we deliberately left Los Angeles on a weekday and aimed for an early lunch, arriving around 11 a.m. The drive itself set the tone—cool air, soft clouds, and a calm that made the journey feel like part of the experience. I’ll admit, as someone who starts nearly every morning with a Costco croissant, I arrived skeptical. How different could a croissant really be? That doubt quickly transformed into anticipation when I saw a long line of customers outside, all wearing the unmistakable look of eager expectation. The wait took longer than expected, and just as impatience began to creep in, an elderly gentleman appeared carrying a tray of what he called “today’s beverages.” Offering mineral water, tea, and coffee—along with jokes and friendly conversation—he effortlessly dissolved any lingering frustration. It was a thoughtful, human touch that set Izola apart even before the first bite. By the time we placed our order around 11:20 a.m., nearly all of the seasonal pastries were already sold out. Only the almond croissant and pain au chocolat remained. While my imagination had already wandered through visions of everything we might taste, we gladly took what was available and added a loaf of frozen sourdough to bring home. The croissants arrived on a large, warm wooden board, and they were stunning—delicate, elegant, almost like a princess in a white gown seated gracefully before us. One bite was enough to make me realize just how mediocre the croissants I had been eating daily truly were. The almond croissant was extraordinary: crisp and crunchy almonds on the outside, while inside, rich, gently melted butter infused the soft layers with a subtle sweetness that felt indulgent yet refined. Our family typically doesn’t gravitate toward chocolate pastries, but the pain au chocolat quickly erased any hesitation. The chocolate wasn’t overly sweet; instead, it was deeply flavorful and perfectly balanced, cradled by the buttery, flaky pastry. It was sophisticated, restrained, and utterly satisfying. Both croissants were exceptional, but if I had to recommend just one, the almond croissant would be my clear choice. This visit felt like discovering an entirely new world of croissants. As a family, we’ve already made a promise: the next time we visit San Diego, we’ll come at dawn—determined to experience Izola’s seasonal pastries before they disappear.
Stumbled upon this place on a bike ride around East Village. Line was out the door. Figured it must be good. AT IT WAS! Completely worth the wait no matter how long the line. HOWEVER, I would highly recommend (1) order online and skip the line and (2) get there EARLY as they sell out of popular items quickly — especially the caramel knot and sour dough loaves. With that said, the s’mores croissant and AMAZING. Not too sweet. Just right. And they fire it right at the table. Such a cool eating “experience”. Staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is lovely with big open spaces to sit and overlook the park. Very kid friendly. Loved the vanilla latte as well and the cute glass it comes in!
One of San Diego’s renowned bakeries, we had to wait over 30 minutes to enter. Despite the wait, the service was friendly, and the staff engaged us well, offering us champagne while we waited. Unfortunately, most of the dishes we ordered ran out. We tried their famous butter croissant, all-in-one croissant, and chocolate croissant. The croissants were amazing fresh, fluffy, and delicious. My favorites were the chocolate and all-in-one croissants. We also tried the butter caramel knot, vanilla knot, cappuccino, mocha, coconut milk latte, and caffe latte. The croissants were incredible, but we were disappointed that the almond chocolate croissant, mini croissant, and Moroccan chocolate croissant were unavailable. The butter caramel knot was one of the best I’ve ever had. The coffee was also great fresh and refreshing. We also ordered their sourdough, which was fresh and fluffy. Overall, it was a great experience, except for the long wait times. It’s still expensive than a regular bakery and I hope they bring it down soon.
Move to San Diego about 3 years ago and izola has been on the list ever since then, and finally went when we had some friends visiting. This place is definitely worth the hype! We got there around 9:30 a.m On a Sunday morning. And it was perfect because the line was quite short but it started getting longer about 45 minutes later. If you have to get only one thing here, for a Savory item I would say get the Bibimbap Croissant and for a sweet it would be the End Bits! Bibimbap croissant was 12/10 It had the actual beef filling on the inside and even some sauce and they gave extra sauce on the outside which went so well with everything in there. Really good and creative croissant. Muffaletta was 7/10. It had the meat filling inside but it was not distributed too well and overall a little bit salty and not as wow as the Bibimbap. Moroccan black, olive and chocolate 9/10 I was a little hesitant about the olive here because I'm not a fan of olives, but you don't really taste any of that. It's like a lovely crispy flaky croissant with rich chocolate on the inside. The chocolate is warm and melty so definitely recommend having while you're still there! End Bits - 12/10 This is basically pieces of their extra croissant dough that they they just layer on a glass bowl along with some cinnamon, sugar and raisins pop Think you're having a warm cinnamon raisin bread that's flaky and crispy like a croissant instead. Perfect amount of sweetness and just magical Took one of the their chili crisp aka Lao Gan Ma and Gruyere sourdough to go and nothing was quite loaded! Quite an expensive sourdough though because it was $22 for that loaf. Honestly it was delicious but I don't think it's something I would get too many times because it's quite expensive.
It’s rare that a bakery earns my full 100% approval rating, but these guys absolutely did. I heard about them from a YouTube reviewer and had to check it out. I’ll admit—I was skeptical because of the location. But I was pleasantly surprised by the neighborhood, the easy parking, and the beautiful park right next door. The baked goods and sandwiches were exceptionally well made and beautifully presented. The croissants had that perfect combination you almost never find: crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Every item looked like a piece of art, and the staff could clearly explain the value and details behind each menu item. That alone is surprising, refreshing, and rare in San Diego. We tried different coffees during both of our visits, and while they’re machine-made, that’s not a negative. They’ve clearly invested in top-tier equipment, and it shows—the latte, cappuccino, and Americano were spot-on in flavor, temperature, and balance. I ended up chatting with the GM for quite a while, and I highly recommend taking the time to get to know the staff. And definitely tip them well—they’ve earned it.
