I had my hair done by Victoria and she was absolutely amazing. She did a great job on advising on styling techniques and products to use to get the results I want. The final result was fantastic and I feel more confident with my hair. Booking is very easy on their website and you can always call them for any questions if unsure.
I’m extremely disappointed with my experience at this salon. I trusted them because I believed it was a high-end place, and I genuinely regret it. I paid £77 for a new client haircut that was incredibly basic—something I could have easily had done at home. But the main issue was the colour service, which cost £200. I went in with black hair and asked for a dark cherry red. Instead, my hair was bleached without any colour being mixed into the bleach, and the only “dye” applied was a toner at the end. It faded after a single wash. When I asked about it during the balayage (as I couldn’t see any colour applied), I was told, “this is how it’s done here” so I assumed this was standard practice. However, at no point beforehand was it explained that my hair would be bleached without an actual colour layer being applied. The result has left my hair severely damaged. My hair is now extremely dry, brittle, and damaged to the point that I don’t even want to look at it. (Despite having beauty potion treatment (£40) after the balayage and using recommended hair mask) This experience has genuinely affected my wellbeing, and I’ve never left a salon with this level of damage before, especially at these prices. Although I eventually received a refund for the colour service, it doesn’t undo the damage or the stress this has caused. I’m sharing my experience so others can make an informed decision before booking. (I’ve attached the photos of my hair after the balayage and after just one wash)
I normally don’t leave bad reviews, but I think it’s important to share my experience so others—especially those with textured or mixed-race hair—can make informed decisions. I came in with clear reference photos for a warm blonde with coppery hints. My hair lifts easily, and stylists who have worked with me before have had no issues achieving blonde. Unfortunately, this salon delivered something completely different from what I asked for. My hair was toned a dark copper/red and then corrected multiple times, leaving me with an ashy ginger-brown that didn’t resemble any of my references or the kind of tone I talked about— wanting it to return to the honey blonde, and not liking ash shades, not wanting a true red copper or dark red. At one point, a stylist who did my initial consultation (Adam) tried to convince me that my dark, uneven result “matched” the blonde photos I provided, zooming into the darkest area of one photo, which was very uncomfortable and felt dismissive. The appointment lasted six hours with repeated washes and re-toning, and I was left with a blowout that was frizzy and unfinished. I was upset by the stage and they redid the blowdry but the salon policy of only using one tool and technique (a vess brush) means they functionally can’t do blowouts on Afro hair— which a stylist confirmed when I asked how they’d do a blowdry on type four hair. When I returned for a correction, the senior stylist suggested bleaching out some of the toner but after I shared my feedback and anxiety about going in with more bleach, essentially said they wouldn’t be doing a correction. At that point, it was clear the team did not feel confident working with my hair, suggested this wasn’t the salon for me (fair) and neither of us felt safe proceeding further. I left with a colour very far from what I requested and weeks of regrowth ahead until I can fix to the warm color I wanted. I was offered a refund and some of the stylists were kind or, a least, forthright but it was still a very upsetting experience. I’m leaving this review because this salon does stress its Afro specialization but everything from how bleach was discussed (it was suggested my hair color would need two rounds to lift bright enough!) to toner and the blowdry policy showed me they probably only have limited experience on looser curls and natural curl cuts/diffusing. I hope this helps other clients with textured or mixed-race hair make an informed choice, and I also hope the salon invests in more education on Black hair and has adopts an approach that doesn’t exclude Black clients from basic services like blowouts. Edit, after reply from salon: this was shared for Black and curly haired potential clients so they have full awareness. While I appreciate the refund was set up quickly after I asked the salon for one when the stylist was unable to do my hair at the fixer appt, that doesn't mean I shouldn't share my experiences. As I said a number of times, this isn't about liking round brushes; a stylist told me themselves that they don't/probably could not do a blowout on natural Type 4 Afro hair. More inclusive tools include: comb attachments, boar bristle brushes, paddle brushes, vented brushes, RevAir etc. One of the most frustrating elements was how much this policy -- which is functionally discriminatory -- has been reduced to a personal preference for round brushes. In reality, I just prefer inclusion backed up by practice, and listening backed up by action. Reconsider the impact of this policy and who it excludes from basic services. If clients with straight hair can leave with a smooth blowout (not a natural style for anyone!), Afro clients should be able to as well.
Could not recommend this salon enough! All members of staff were welcoming and the space is beautiful. This was my first haircut in Manchester and I felt looked after from the second I walked in. Hamish was amazing, he was friendly, patient and offered great suggestions when I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted. He checked in with me throughout to make sure I was happy with the progress, and even taught me lots about how to style my hair. He made my bob perfectly layered with a fringe I love. I did not doubt for one second that he wouldn’t do a good job, and I left with the best haircut i’ve ever had. So so happy with the result and would love to return to the salon again! Thank you Hamish & team 🤍
I recently had my first professional dye at Melissa Timperley Salons, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. I was quite nervous going in, but the team was incredibly welcoming and put me at ease right away. Ella, in particular, was amazing. She was so patient and thorough, taking the time to understand exactly what I wanted and explaining each step of the process. Her expertise and attention to detail were evident, and I felt completely confident in her hands. The finished result is absolutely stunning, and I am delighted with how my hair turned out. Thank you so much to Ella and the entire team at Melissa Timperley Salons for making my first dye experience such a positive one!
