I heard 5th Avenue Jewellers are the best in the biz so that’s where I went to make my first jewellery investment. There were many beautiful pieces in the shop! Ultimately, I decided on a pair of diamond and gold sleepers and I’m in LOVE. A work of art, so beautifully made. I actually can’t stop looking in the mirror... A great vibe in the store too - friendly, welcoming and helpful. Thank you, see you again :)

That’s a very interesting (and fairly common) symptom — when a watch runs fine on a table but slows down or stops on the wrist. Since you’ve replaced the battery and the issue keeps recurring, it’s almost certainly not the battery itself. Let’s go through the main causes by type of watch: --- ### 🔹 1. **Quartz (battery-powered) watch** If it’s quartz, possible causes include: #### **a. Moisture or condensation inside the case** * Body heat and sweat can slightly warm the watch and cause condensation inside, especially if the case seals or gaskets are not fully tight. * Moisture can cause temporary shorts or affect the step motor, making the watch slow or stop. * It often “recovers” when it cools off on a table. ✅ **Check:** Look closely for fogging under the crystal after wearing it, or tiny corrosion spots on the battery contacts. --- #### **b. Loose or corroded battery contact** * When worn, small amounts of flexing or expansion from warmth can break a marginal contact connection. * It runs fine stationary, but movement/temperature change causes intermittent contact. ✅ **Fix:** Have a watchmaker clean and tighten the battery contacts and ensure the cell fits snugly. --- #### **c. Magnetization** * Less common in quartz, but if the coil or step motor becomes magnetized, your body’s magnetic field or metal accessories could influence its behavior. * A watchmaker can easily demagnetize it. --- #### **d. Movement short or motor coil issue** * If there’s a partial short in the motor coil, it can become more sensitive to temperature. Body heat raises resistance slightly, lowering voltage to the motor — it may skip steps. ✅ **Fix:** Needs a professional to test the coil resistance and replace if needed. --- ### 🔹 2. **Automatic / Mechanical watch** If it’s mechanical: #### **a. Magnetization** * Magnetized balance spring can cause erratic timing that changes with orientation or proximity to metal (like your wrist). * Watchmakers can demagnetize in minutes. #### **b. Position-dependent friction** * When flat on a table, gravity and lubrication balance are fine; when on your wrist, different orientations or temperature expansion increase friction at pivots or gears. * That points to **dry oil or dirty movement**, needing cleaning and lubrication (a “service”). #### **c. Temperature effect** * Body warmth can thin or expand old lubricants and slightly alter spring tension. If the watch hasn’t been serviced in a few years, this can cause it to slow or stop. --- ### 🔹 3. **Less common: Skin/body effects** * Heavy perspiration or certain skin chemistries can cause minor corrosion on the caseback or gasket, leading to electrical leakage (in quartz) or internal moisture buildup. --- ### ✅ **What to do next** 1. **Confirm type:** Quartz or mechanical (look for a ticking seconds hand vs smooth sweep). 2. **Inspect for condensation or corrosion.** 3. **Try a demagnetization test.** 4. **Have a watchmaker check battery contacts and gaskets** — often a quick, inexpensive fix. 5. **If mechanical, schedule a service.** --- If you tell me the **make and model** of the watch, I can narrow down the likeliest cause and the easiest way to confirm it at home. Wonderful boutique jewellery, much of it made in house to their own designs. Classy but at the same time a la mode . Very helpful in the shop and have got to know me over the years.
