Been bodybuilding here for 3 years consistently and it’s a great all-purpose gym, easily in the top 3 for Manitoba. Staff are awesome as they actually hire people who workout frequently and know what they’re doing. I see them spotting people and showing them exercises all the time, seems like all you got to do is walk up and ask. Equipment is great here compared to most gyms. If you spend enough time here you get privileged, and when you go to another gym you realize you’re stuck with dumbbells for half your exercises. then you feel like a dirty caveman lol Like most gyms, way too many treadmills and ellipticals, except for during the first week of January (iykyk). They need way more of those dual cable machines, at least 3 to 5 more. It’s hard enough to get a single cable and stack for your tricep pulldowns, nevermind finding a double one around for your advanced upper body movements. They also need more stairmasters, 3 to 5 more as well
Good place but full of theft. I often lose my stuff from locker room. Yesterday someone took my leather jacket with all my keys. Please use lock or don’t bring anything expensive at ALC.
a really great gym that the city has to offer. I’ve been going since 2019, during covid, as a student and as an alumni. I've tried other gyms but what the ALC has to offer is unmatched. It’s very clean, organized and the staff upstairs has always been friendly and helpful. When the seasons change there's always some people who enter with outdoor shoes which makes it frustrating but the staff is always cleaning and working to keep it up to par and maintenance is relatively quick anytime something does go wrong or is disorganized. It’s really big which can seem intimidating but it isn’t. Plenty of equipment with 12 squat racks, 4 smith machines, plenty of treadmills… but it can still get very busy so as some other reviews have mentioned you just need to plan it out right. One downside is needing to pay for parking before 4:30pm, however I understand that's out of their control. The natural light with windows everywhere is appreciated. The change rooms are huge with a really great sauna and numerous mirrors which is also appreciated. Shower water pressure is good too. Hands down my favourite place.
Been attending the spin groups since November, great experience! Trainers are all supportive and encouraging cannot recommend highly enough. Thanks to Claudio, Mikayla and Kelly! All inspiring instructors!
I have been to this gym since when it was just built. During the pandemic, I went to other gyms for probably 3 years, but went back to this gym again. In my opinion, this gym probably is the best gym in the city. Big enough with lots of equipment, and it also has indoor running track. I also go to the swimming pool once every week, but make sure you check the swimming pool time table first, some lanes or pools are reserved for events or classes. Although the gym is big, I found it is still really packed during rush hours (4:30 pm - 6:30 pm ish), you may have difficulty to find the equipment you want to use that isn't occupied. Therefore, I usually go around or after 7:00 pm. The parking is free after 4:30 pm and during weekends, otherwise you probably need to pay for parking, unless you have something like parking pass (or whatever it is called). Price wise, they give alumni good discount so it is much more cost effective than other commercial gyms for those who graduated from U of M.
