I’ve been a loyal member of Golds Gym (Del Mar, Laredo) for over five years, previously paying around $75/month, and today’s experience was extremely disappointing and unprofessional. I came in intending to purchase the month-to-month membership ($105) because I live out of town, but did not have my card on me. One of the front-desk employees — who was kind, professional, and helpful — allowed me to start my workout, with the understanding that I would return the next day to pay. Shortly after, the manager intervened, reprimanded the employee in front of others, and insisted I be charged immediately for a $27 day pass, despite the gym offering free trial days and routinely allowing walk-ins to try the gym. The situation was handled poorly, inconsistently, and without respect for long-term members (as a young athlete this has been my home gym for years within that I was 100% going to pay the month pass). What bothered me most was not the fee, but the lack of professionalism, respect, and accountability from management, especially toward their own staff. I attempted to speak directly with the manager to resolve the issue calmly, but she refused. Golds Gym has great equipment and excellent employees with amazing service— but management behavior like this drives loyal members away. I hope ownership takes this feedback seriously and addresses how customers and staff are treated.
My experience was as follows: I missed a couple of months, I paid $182 on October 31st, then on the 15th, I received a new bill for an additional $125. I made the payment and canceled. They asked me to send an email, which informed me that due to a month's notice, I had to pay another $95, which I did. However, I would not return, especially since the pool is in bad condition and dirty. In the end, I paid $405 to cancel.
Great friendly staff & environment, open spaces, clean and so much equipment I just started but love it already
I was in Laredo for one week on work travel and signed up online for the 7-day free trial at Gold’s Gym. When I arrived at the Del Mar location, staff told me the trial was not accepted and instead offered me a one-week paid pass. I agreed, signed some paperwork, and had my photo taken—under the impression that this was only for one week of access. I only used the gym once, as I found the facility lacking, the atmosphere unwelcoming, and the staff unfriendly. Two weeks later, I began receiving calls claiming my account was past due. When I followed up, I was shocked to learn that I had supposedly been signed up for a full-year contract instead of a one-week pass as I was told. When I tried to resolve the issue, the general manager refused to make it right. I was told I would need to pay $188.08 to close the account—“discounted” to $108.08—or the balance would be sent to collections. Despite clearly explaining the situation, I was treated as though I was at fault. After speaking with other military personnel, I found that this has happened to several of them as well. This seems to be a recurring pattern at Gold’s Gym Laredo, and I would caution others—especially service members—to be extremely careful before signing anything at this location.
