I went to the Seattle location with high hopes. It was so crowded you couldn't even spend time looking. There was a few things that I saw but couldn't get close due to the over crowding. If you go I would suggest avoid the times from 11am to 3 pm as that was when I went.
This is an amazing offshoot to see out in the wild, for animé, manga, plushies, stationary and office/art supplies. A store that carries some of the best supplies in the flesh is pretty rare. They ended up having the right brands *and* it's new stock, otherwise, my only next option is to hit up JetPens waiting for over a week+.
I’ve been to various Kinokuniya locations around the U.S. and in Japan, but the Seattle store is probably my least favorite. On a recent trip, I visited the nearby supermarket almost every day for five days, and each time, I also stopped by the Kinokuniya bookstore. These are my thoughts. I found the staff to be mediocre at best. There were very few employees around to ask for help, and during all five of my visits, there were no staff members upstairs in the manga section. I had to run up and down the stairs several times just to find someone who could unlock a case so I could make a purchase. This would never happen in Japan. Minus one star. I also found the staff to be quite curt and somewhat rude—short with their answers, dismissive, and generally unhelpful. There’s nothing unusual about me, and I’m always polite, so receiving that kind of treatment was genuinely disappointing and surprising. Minus one star. Finally, the pricing here is out of this world. Nearly everything they carry can be found online for significantly less. The whole point of having a physical location is to offer unique items at reasonable prices. I’m not sure if the overhead at this location is just very high, but when you can find nearly everything online for much cheaper, it makes little sense to buy anything here. Minus one star. All in all, I don’t mind walking in to browse the selection, but I don’t think I would ever actually purchase anything here unless it was exclusive to this location. I found the staff to be incredibly rude and unhelpful, and if you need assistance, you’ll have to actively search for someone—only for them to respond arrogantly, as if you’re inconveniencing them by asking for help. Absolutely ridiculous.
A broad selection of all your Manga needs. Great place to get stationery, stickers, and blinds boxes. I spent about 2 hours in here alone because there is so much to look at. Great staff! Check out their limited edition items when visiting (if available).
Been going here for in person japanese goods alternative for 4 years. Really good selection on top of membership discount. While they have more mainstream stuff for merch they also have some of the lesser known properties from Japan and Korea. You can also take advantage of the artbooks, how to draw books, and mags that you usually have to import for.
