We used to go here all the time, but it's gotten really overpriced and not fun. The current baristas are fine, but the ones who are now gone used to be really friendly and treated regulars like family. The coffee is just okay. The last time I went in, I was charged extra for sweetener, which is wild for an already $7 drink. I don't mind paying a premium if their is a place to hang out, but it's really a to-go shop. Also, the few times I've encountered both the owner of the store and the owner of the building, they've been less than pleasant.
I visit this coffee shop regularly and find the staff to be exceptionally pleasant and welcoming. This review is so upper management can hear a regular customer request -- please please bring almond milk back! It's great that they have alternative forms for those lactose intolerant like oat, however the recent change from almond to protein milk has changed the flavor profile. Separately, now all "milk" based coffees (lattes, cortados, etc.) generally have quite high calorie contents making coffee like a meal. Otherwise, I think the roast is some of the best I have had in L.A. Hoping almond milk makes a comeback!!
The staff was friendly and helped a lot by describing the drinks available and giving honest recommendations. I got the azuki with almond milk, which was a red bean coffee drink. I didn’t taste much red bean but it was nutty in flavor. I also got the kouign amann which was delicious. I would go back for the pastry alone. They also had good music playing. Definitely more of a take out coffee shop. They have a few small tables in front but this isn’t a work friendly cafe. Walked here around 8:30 am on a Tuesday and there was no line. Definitely try this spot out!
This little coffee shop in Mid City has so much potential. It’s a tiny spot that the local community really seems to appreciate, with a handful of specialty drinks and some pastries that make it worth stopping by. The atmosphere has that neighborhood charm you’d expect from a place like this. Unfortunately, the service really drags the whole experience down. On my most recent visit (9/10/25), the girl working the counter looked as if she couldn’t care less about being there. Her energy was flat, unwelcoming, and honestly sucked the life out of what could otherwise be a great shop. It’s disappointing, because good service is just as important as good coffee, and this place deserves staff who reflect the pride the community has for it. If the service improves, this could easily be a go-to coffee spot in Mid City. Until then, it feels like wasted potential.
Not so much weird science as it is great coffee, I was really happy to find Mad Lab close to where I’m staying in LA! This is some of the tastiest coffee I’ve tried and the staff are super nice. There’s a small selection of pastries with a vegan option, a carrot cake doughnut thingy; it was delish. I left with some of their in house beans, roasted in LA and touting an elderberry, Blenheim apricot and lilac finish, which made for a wonderful at home coffee. Also lovely were the folks hanging around drinking their morning brews, along with a few pups, it’s a really pleasant vibe. Welcome to the Lab!
