A fascinating place to visit on one of the monthly open days - see photo for schedule. While I am sure it is spectacular as an event venue, to have the time to wander and wonder at the building interior is an hour well spent. Knowledgable guides bring to life to story of the murals and the history of the building. Rightly called Edinburgh’s Sistine Chapel.
🎨 My Visit to Mansfield Traquair, Edinburgh Visiting Mansfield Traquair was an awe-inspiring experience. Often called “Edinburgh’s Sistine Chapel,” this magnificent former Catholic Apostolic Church is renowned for its breathtaking murals painted by Phoebe Anna Traquair in the late 19th century. The vibrant artwork covers the walls and ceilings, depicting biblical scenes, angels, and intricate symbolism — a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts movement. The restored building combines stunning Romanesque architecture with remarkable artistic detail, creating a peaceful and uplifting atmosphere. The soft lighting enhances the colors, making every corner feel like a living canvas. Visitor Tips: Check opening times or special event schedules before visiting, as it often hosts weddings and exhibitions. Guided tours are highly recommended to appreciate the story behind the murals. How to Reach: Located on Mansfield Place, just off Broughton Street, it’s a short walk from Edinburgh city centre or easily reachable by local bus. Overall, Mansfield Traquair is a hidden gem in Edinburgh — a breathtaking fusion of faith, art, and architecture that deserves to be seen in person.
The venue is a late 18th-century church beautifully converted into an event space, with a warm ambiance and welcoming hospitality. The selection of wine and beer is excellent, and the entertainment is a real highlight, especially the wonderful Scottish band and performances, which truly stand out. However, the food is rather average. In trying to be overly elite and fancy, it has lost the authentic Scottish flavor one might expect. Considering the high prices and lack of real culinary substance, I wouldn’t plan a visit for the food alone. Overall, it can be a great spot, if improve towards genuine Scottish dining.
Stunningly decorated by the Arts and Crafts painter Mary Traquair. The building is available as a wedding venue and has excellent office space on lower floors.
