The location is at a busy street with popular ice cream place Ben and Jerry's nearby. I saw many arts and crafts there, like stationary, tie-dye kits, paint, headbands, safety eyes, and yarn. The cashier even asked if I wanted a bag at check-out.
I have been shopping at Mendels off an on for decades. I admit that I avoid going there as I often spend more than I wanted to. That's because I find fun things that are hard to pass up. I just went in to buy some fabric and before I knew it, I found way more than I had gone in for! They carry a decent selection of almost everything artsy. Colored pencils, stencils, paints, fabric, trims, accessories and more! Their fabrics are some of the highest quality that you can find in SF. They often stock unusual and trendy fabrics as well (note the rainbow skull fabric.) As soon as I had selected a bolt of fabric, an employee was right there offering to cut it for me. She also helped me find some other items. Their staff has always been friendly. This isn't a discount store, but I think most of its items are fairly priced. The location is great too. I can always find something else to do in The Haight.
Mendels is a true neighborhood treasure. This craft store has heart, character, and everything you didn’t know you needed. The staff is kind and helpful, and the selection is full of color and inspiration. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just getting creative, Mendels always feels like home.
The perfect craft store (and locally owned to boot). There is a section for everything. Painting of all types and mediums, paper, books, putties, dyes, stickers, knitting, trims, buttons, a sewing section, scrapbooking. I am obsessed with this place and always spend way more than I anticipated because there’s so much greatness to find. They regularly update stock and also bring in high quality items from small sellers. Mendels Forever!!!
