Great place to climb. Friendly staff, good coffee and brilliant facilities
Rockover sharston is the southern branch of Manchester’s first bouldering wall. It is well located with links to most other European countries and many intercontinental destinations through the nearby Manchester international airport. The centre is complete with three rooms of problems in addition to a gym area and a good LED board (45 degrees?). The centre lacks a cafe, but does offer snacks and fresh coffee. A unique aspect of rockover in the wake of an international competition climbing boom is the ode to old school indoor climbing. Many of the problems here are more basic and static in nature lending themselves to strong fingers and technical movement rather than explosive power and running across volumes. As an outdoor climber I can appreciate this and find it refreshing! It also provides variety and is unique within the Manchester indoor climbing scene. The board is good and has a range of nice holds appropriate for setting good climbs probably up to the mid 8s and beyond. The software is the ubiquitous digital training boards system which can often be (and was on our visit) glitchy. To complement the outdoor style setting, the roof is extremely leaky, with numerous wet patches around the centre making for a dingey limestone cave feel. The lighting is also quite dim, which can be straining on the eyes after a while. There is a fireplace which is a nice touch, though I wonder of it’s effectiveness on cold winter days. Overall, a variety of well set climbs across a wide range of grades, complemented by a good board and a gym. All the essentials for a good climbing wall, but with more of an old-school feel- which a lot of people prefer. The centre is spacious, and I can see room for expanding the number and size of climbing areas if needed in the future.
Large sized climbing gym. Loads of routes with a great selection of grades and walls. Inclusive and friendly welcoming safe space. Great selection of weights and basic equipment in gym and warmup area. Separate digital training board and rungs. Good sized coffee/chill out area. Friendly staff. Cute adorable doggo. Parking area. Will definitely go again.
~ crack problem added!!~ 😤😜 We went on opening day. Was really fun, some interesting problems even at our low skill level. Staff were very welcoming. No gym equipment yet but I believe that is on the way. Enjoyed the slab of the week too. There is a smallish car park, and a lot of on road parking in the surrounding industrial state, but it was pretty full of cars on the day we went (Saturday). Needs some crack climbs to earn my final star UPDATE: they have added a Wideboyz crack into a problem! Take my final star
Not as big as the centre in Manchester...however it was big enough for me and a couple of others to spend 2 hours there and not run out of climbs to do (we climb at 3-5+ levels). A great range of climbs, very similar in style to the main centre....possibly the only issue is that there are no cave climbs, but that's being very picky. There were also lots of easier climbs to do if you are a beginner. We'll be back!
