Great artists (we saw Jesse Reyes), sound and lights, but standing room only. Ideal really just for tall people
Decent spot for larger all ages show. Parking can be tough so arrive early. Pretty flat inside so if you are on the shorter side, arrive early to grab a wall spot to sit/stand OR get yourself placed for good visibility.
I, a transmasc person went there for a show with a vip ticket, so I interacted with security earlier than most. The security guard was huge and heavily tatted in ways that make a person like me nervous. After he did bag check for the vips, he called me over, and I was expecting the worst, but instead he told me I was safe there, and use any bathroom I wanted. If I needed anything or anyone messes with me, come to him. By the time I went to the bathroom they had done what these pictures show. And let me tell you, people were going into whatever room had next available , there was no line. Never seen anything like it. NO LINE at a rock concert between sets!! Thank you SOMA! You should make that permanent!!!
Easy enough to get to for the first time. Parking is quite limited directly in front of the building, but there is plenty of parking at Pechenga right next door that is free; I imagine if both venues were having a show, it would be more difficult. Parking was pretty poorly labeled though, and to get from the Pechenga lot to the SOMA lot, you have to walk around a fence (or through the gate if they have it open), which again is perfectly doable, but slightly confusing the first time. In a car, you also have to get back on Sports Arena Dr from the SOMA lot to get to the Pechenga lot. Inside the venue, staff was plentiful in getting people to where they need to go, but could have used better signage for the busy merch line rather than the employees constantly corralling people. Merch booths took credit but concession stand says cash only. Bathrooms were no problem early on after doors opened and before show started; I could see them being an issue between sets if a lot of people were trying to use them, due to small size. There was also a ton of water on the floor, so avoid bringing your JNCOs. I've seen many comments about this venue that the AC is terrible/it's so stuffy inside, I didn't find that to be an issue at all. The website says no moshing or crowdsurfing, which I was surprised given the type of acts that play here and the venue's history. This was a joke, the mosh pit started immediately and crowdsurfing went on most of the night (as I'd expect for a deathcore show). The staff was incredible at grabbing people from the front of the floor area. Overall a good concert experience here, and I wouldn't be disappointed to see that a band I like is playing here.
It's a big enough venue, but parking is an issue. We ended up parking across the street near the Target/Ross. Also, it is so damn hot in that building. We went on October 1st to see Marylin Manson. The show hadn't even started yet and as we walked in to the main lobby area we were greeted by a thick wall of heat and humidity. As we stepped into the actual show floor, the heat was miserable. There was absolutely no ventilation in there, despite having all the exterior doors open. I understand large crowds create a lot of heat but I haven't had this issue at other venues in the San Diego area.
