I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS LAW FIRM FOR ANY PURPOSE. I retained this firm for a family court matter in Onondaga County. A case that should have been resolved in no more than 2 court appearances has been dragged out now for almost 6 months. This firm is only interested in your money, not protecting your rights. Please do your homework and use a different law firm. They scammed me, but don't let it happen to you.

The absolute worst experience I could’ve ever had in my life. In one of the hardest times of my life this law firm perk me with an incompetent lawyer that swore up and down everything that I was asking For was reasonable and easy to obtain up until the day of court, which then he switched his whole tone to being we need to be “Willing to sacrifice the things we wanted for one extra day a week when I was trying to go for 50-50 custody. An offer that was already made to be prior to having council. The lawyer spent weeks telling me that everything was OK and burned through $5000 of my retainer before he even told me yeah we’re not gonna be able to get anything better. He Was then removed and fired, and instead of the law firm making things right and offering me even a slight percentage of my money back They had the nerve to ask for a retainer Refill. This law firm cost me $7500 of money and got me a worse deal than what I already had offered prior to having a lawyer.

I used Colwell Law for modification of custody and visitation. I was assigned Lou Detor as my lawyer and paid 7500 for a retainer fee. I had multiple conversations with Lou, including paying for a private investigator and doing my own evidence collecting because I was told I had a case. I kept him updated on everything and he continued to tell me to continue doing what I was doing and that everything would play out in my favor. The day before court we agreed to push things off to another court date in order to have more time to collect the evidence from the private investigator. The day of court he told my ex's lawyer we wanted to settle and put his own stipulations that we did not discuss to be modified in the court order. Him doing this ruined all of the evidence that I had collected from the PI and wasting all of the money I spent on it. None of the evidence that I had that he told me I could use was even brought up. I also had multiple charges on the bill that I should not have been charged for including calling to let them know I wanted to close out with them. I was blind sided and taken advantage of emotionally for my money. I do not recommend using Colwell Law and especially Lou Detor.

I recently spoke with Sarah Alaimo at The Colwell Law Group, LLC. She was incredibly kind, understanding, and knowledgeable. She really took the time to listen and showed genuine sympathy for my situation, which I deeply appreciated. In the end, I didn’t retain the firm’s services because the retainer fee of $6,500 was just too high for me. That’s the main reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5. Still, Sarah made a difficult conversation feel much easier, and I’m grateful for her professionalism and compassion.
