I joined this dojo six months ago on the recommendation of a friend, in the process returning to karate after *mumble* decades away. I immediately felt welcomed and made a part of the community, and have continued to feel that warmth and kindness as my time with Sensei Lucas and my fellow students has passed. The style of training at this dojo has also proven to be exceptionally enjoyable. While primarily karate-focussed, we have also incorporated elements of tai chi, aikido, judo, and this summer we have also been training in a nearby park, working on kobudo (weapons training) with bokken (wooden swords) and bo (quarter)staves. This variety is one of the appeals of the classes, along with a valuable emphasis on practical application/self-defence. For a middle-aged gent like me, the training has also helped to maintain the strength and flexibility of my body, and is helping to counter the increasing stiffness that comes with age. Sensei Lucas is himself an outstanding teacher: knowledgeable, compassionate, patient, good-humoured, and also keen to help his students to achieve their best. There are certainly times when I feel like I have been thrown in at the deep end, getting lost in particularly complex katas or exercises, but have never felt judged or denigrated for it. It is, after all, only by jumping into the deep water that one learns to swim! Other students in the class have also been excellent teachers, and I have been very grateful for their patience and kindness. Highest recommendation!
Summary: highly recommended for both Taiji and Karate. Whether you are looking for health exercise, martial arts, or self-defence, this is a great place. By the time I moved to Vancouver I had been doing Taiji for several years. I continued practicing by myself while looking for someone who taught Taiji as a martial art. Eventually after trying several teachers I found Lucas and have been very happy with his understanding, teaching, and the wonderful community he fosters in the dojo. Side remark: most people play Taiji as a health exercise. In that context practicing with a partner is still important, since this is how you test your body mechanics. The martial art aspect isn't about "fighting". When my kids were old enough we started the parents-and-kids karate classes, which are very good and now I do Karate as well. This is a small dojo compared to the commercial operations around town, so for each group (Taiji, Karate, parents-and-kids) everyone trains together in a single class. The atmosphere is very supportive and welcoming and people help each other.
My son and I have been training at the Vancouver Dojo with Sensei Lucas for the past three years, and it's been an incredibly rewarding experience. The classes are both challenging and supportive, and we've grown stronger together while being part of a welcoming martial arts community.
Me and my sister have joined the dojo and did Karate for around a month now. Lucas-sensei and all the students have been very warm, patient and attentive in the learning process. Going through both simple and advance techniques, we are exposed to many aspects of traditional karate and self defence ideas. I can wholeheartedly recommend this dojo to anyone wanting to learn in an welcoming environment that is accommodates all levels of experience!
We joined Vancouver Dojo four years ago and really enjoy the parent/kids class and the adult karate classes. The atmosphere is so positive letting us learn at our pace while encouraging hard work. I've never really enjoyed gyms since I find working out a bit boring, so I prefer traditional martial arts even though I wouldn't call myself very athletic.
