🌟 Five Minds Turned a Squat-Rack Spy Into a Karate Student 🌟 I’ve been working out at Core Strength & Performance for years, and Five Minds is in the SAME building. So every day while I was working out, I’d spend months watching their classes from the squat rack like a nosey neighbor pretending to water the yard just to eavesdrop. 😂 After months of squat surveillance, I finally said, “Okay… it’s my turn.” Deven is unbelievably patient, kind and helpful and Dave is one of the most skilled, steady, patient and intelligent instructors you’ll ever meet. The fact they can teach me, the person who trips over nothing says everything you need to know. 🤣 They break everything down step-by-step, explain it clearly, and never make you feel out of place. I kick when I’m supposed to punch, punch when I’m supposed to block, and they STILL cheer me on like I’m leveling up every class. 🥋😂 The vibe at Five Minds is welcoming, the people are great, and no karate is not just for little kids. You can start at ANY age, any fitness level, any coordination level (even mine).
I have been training with/under Professor Dave Frizzell since I was a white belt, and every belt promotion I’ve earned from him, up to my current rank as a purple belt, has come directly from his guidance, instruction and mentorship. His new Jiu Jitsu is a testament to his dedication to the art and to his students. Professor Frizzell’s teaching style is second to none. He has a deep understanding of Jiu Jitsu fundamentals while always incorporating history across not just Jiu jitsu but all arts. He emphasizes not only technical precision but also the importance of strategy, mindset, and discipline. Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned practitioner, he has the ability to break down even the most complex moves in a way that makes sense and allows you to apply them effectively. One thing that sets Dave apart is the welcoming and positive environment he demands. Training here is more than just learning Jiu Jitsu—it’s becoming part of a community that supports one another in achieving personal growth, both on and off the mats. Professor Frizzell genuinely cares about his students, ensuring that everyone, regardless of skill level, feels valued and challenged. He also invests into his students as a mentor, that is something that is hard to find. If you’re looking for a top-tier Jiu Jitsu academy led by a dedicated and highly skilled instructor, I wholeheartedly recommend Professor Dave Frizzell’s academy. It’s been an incredible journey training under him, and while I’m excited for him to open his academy I’m also jealous of those who will get to train with him everyday at his new location. I can’t wait for the academy to open and to take a trip (or a lot) out to train with him!
Great martial arts school (has a gym inside too if u fancy lifting some weights and getting some good coaching ). First our son got enrolled and after a month we couldn't stop ourselves and got involved too. Needless to say our entire family loves spending time here. Kids classes are fun, full of games with purpose. Coaches are doing a great job at making the kids feel comfortable with the new sport and environment and engaging their brain. Adults classes cater to all levels and I feel super comfortable as a beginner. Coaches have a bag of knowledge in the sport and always available to help and guid. The availability of morning classes has made it easier for me to attend.
We workout with Core Strength and Performance which shares a building with 5 Minds. The youth class for 5 Minds lined up with our strength training time so we decided to let all 3 of our kids (15, 13,11) who have never done jiujitsu give it a try. After the first trial class they were all hooked. Dave and Deven do a phenomenal job in the youth class teaching the fundamentals and making it fun. They model the move, train the move, play a game or have an activity to reinforce the moves and then end with some rolling to let the kids put it all together. They are there helping and coaching every step of the way. I also appreciate how they take the time to teach the kids how to be good partners and look out of each other’s safety. This sport is challenging and at times my 13 year old has found himself in uncomfortable positions and panicked a little and Dave or Deven have been right there helping calm him and coaching him through the next steps. And the smile and sense of accomplishment he has for working through hard things has been really rewarding. But I cannot emphasize or say enough about what it has done and taught my daughter already. During my daughter’s trial class, the owner Heidi was there and partnered with her and she had an amazing time. Heidi was a great partner also helping coach her through the moves and positions and during the rolling gave my daughter time work and think and move. The drive home that night she talked non stop what she did and how cool it was. I cannot remember the last time she was so excited about something. As she has done more classes there isn’t always a female there for her to practice with. However all of the guys have always been very respectful and made her feel comfortable. Deven made a point to make sure she knew that if she didn’t want to work with someone she can always say “no” and it doesn’t have to be explained. No is a complete sentence. And that really helps her feel comfortable knowing that. Though she has never felt the need to decline trying any of the movements with any of the great people that train here. She leaves each class with a huge smile and radiating pride in what she did. I love that she is not only getting valuable self defense skills, she is also getting stronger and more confident.
5 Minds Martial arts provides excellent instruction in a beautiful facility, with a fun and welcoming atmosphere. The training provided here is excellent for experienced practitioners and beginners, it’s clear the coaches are passionate about teaching and aim to give their students the best learning experience possible. This goes for the kids and adult classes (I have a 4 year old that has a blast at the Tiny Tatsu classes). The gym sets a high bar, with an ocean of Fuji mats and really nice bathrooms with showers! Highly recommend checking this place out if interested in training.
