The Buffalo AKG Art Museum impressed as soon as you walk into the basement from the underground car park. A winding staircase greets you as you notice the wall art that sets the stage for the visit. The building is wide, open and filled with light. Jim at the reception desk has exceptional customer service. He informed us of the admission prices and optional Kusama exhibits as well as the best route to navigate as to not miss any exhibits. There are also lockers and coat check service available. However we found out later that you’d have to leave your bag unattended whilst being in the two Kusama infinity rooms. I didn’t like that idea of leaving my handbag containing my ID card, money and keys unattended in an open shelf! Surely there has to be a better idea so no one is tempted to take what’s not theirs regardless of the cameras. The infinity rooms viewing was only for 45 seconds, which didn’t make a lot of sense since we were the only ones there and had paid extra to view. Nonetheless the two Kusama exhibits, “One With Eternity”, Infinity Mirrored Room and “Phalli’s Field”, My Heart Dancing Into The Universe impressed in an ingenious whimsical way. The second floor contained works similar to those you would find at the Hirshhorn Museum of modern and contemporary art. My favourite was the DVD projection called Junk by Tony Oursler, with four eyes and one mouth that had us captivated longer than I’d like to admit! The third floor was closed for renovations. The basement level toilets were just as artistic as the museum itself and were immaculately clean. There was even a step up for the little kiddies to wash their hands! The underground parking was a tad pricey at $12 for 3 hours, but there are alternatives nearby.
We came here with our 8 year old son and found it to be a great place. The art was diverse with classic works and modern expressions. The atmosphere was open to quiet discussion without disturbing others and the layout was beautiful and organized. They had a beautiful cafe and indoor courtyard with a wonderful lego activity for children age 10 and below.
Incredible museum. No spoilers. A must visit for locals and visitors. The staff is friendly and ready to answer questions. The restaurant Cornelia offers a dynamic menu, and you can order at the bar if you prefer to eat under Common Sky (canopy of glass and mirrors). The enclosed glass walkway and the Gundlach building are stunning additions. The bathrooms are always clean and classy (the doors reach the floor, a nice upgrade for a public restroom).
Had a bestie date here to specifically experience the Yayoi Kusama exhibit: One with Eternity. The exhibit was so much fun and an awesome interactive experience. Beautiful museum, and I appreciate the on-site parking also! I plan on purchasing a membership soon especially with winter coming so I have a reason to leave the house and what better reason is there than art?!
We had a great time visiting the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, especially taking advantage of the free admission on the first Friday of the month. The atmosphere was fantastic — peaceful, inspiring, and perfect for exploring art. The architecture of the museum itself is beautiful, modern, and thoughtfully designed. Inside, the collection of art is truly impressive, with a great mix of contemporary and classic pieces. It’s a wonderful place to spend an afternoon, and we’re looking forward to coming back again. Highly recommended!
