The City Museum is a wildly creative, artist-built playground and architectural marvel tucked inside a former shoe factory. Made from reclaimed materials, it’s a hands-on wonderland of slides, tunnels, caves, and climbing structures; indoors, outdoors, and even underground. The rooftop alone is unforgettable, with a Ferris wheel and a full-size bus hanging over the edge. Every corner invites curiosity and movement, blending art, play, and imagination in the most “weirdly wonderful” way. With aquariums, eclectic collections, live circus performances, and ever-evolving installations, this is a must-see St. Louis gem for kids and adults alike.
SO. FUN! So much to see and so much to do. Where to start? It's a great place to bring kids, as long as: They are NOT handicapped in any way. They are not asthmatic (or they have an inhaler on their person). And you trust that your child won't run off (or that if they will, they can find their way back to you). There ARE things for handicapped / parents / others to do like animal exhibits, touch pools, art exhibits, but this is a playground mainly for children to burn off energy in. There are lockers for items. I am not sure about costs. There are elevators.
This place was a rip off, started with $17 parking and $50 for two adults. I guess this is a place for children and not a museum, but luckily we didn't have the kids with us or they could have been seriously injured because the slides, caves, and play places are made of metal and concrete, great place to bust your head. Boobs and weird naked bodies were everywhere and there was nothing for adults to do. I felt like I was in a bad dream or went to hell. It smelled like burning something. The circus performers were children and it didn't seem like they were trained well because they kept falling. It looked very painful and I felt sorry for them. The restrooms were filthy and disgusting, not to mention the toilet was off center, so I was touching the wall while I was using it. This was the weirdest and most horrible place I've ever been to, and I've been to Oregon. The only "art" was pieces of buildings from Chicago. Is this the museum of Chicago architecture? I feel horrible that my boyfriend spent money on this and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
10/10 Would defiantly recommend! Great for kids and adult children lol. It’s imagination central! Tons of climbing and running space. An energy outlet for your kids and you. So much to do. 4 floors of fun. Inside and outside activities with several places for drinks and food inside. We will 100% come back again and again.
The City Museum: Round 2 Was Even Better ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you think you know what a "museum" is, forget everything. This place is an industrial beast of creativity, and our second trip here with my son absolutely blew the first one out of the water. We came back for another round, and this time the experience was legendary. Unlike our first visit, every single area was open—we had full reign of the tunnels, the rooftop, and the slides. Seeing the industrial grit of the museum decked out for Christmas added a surreal, magical layer to the chaos. It’s steampunk meets holiday spirit in the most badass way possible. My son and I had the time of our lives climbing, crawling, and exploring. It is rare that a sequel is better than the original, but with the holiday energy and full access, this visit was unmatched. Sage Advice: Don't just walk through it—climb into it. This isn’t a place you look at; it’s a place you survive and conquer. If you're in St. Louis, missing this is a crime.
