Unfortunately, our stay did not live up to the expectations set by the resort’s branding or pricing—especially disappointing since this was our honeymoon. Overall, the experience felt no different than a standard hotel, despite being marketed as a resort. The bars were closed for the entirety of our stay, the outdoor yard games were in poor condition, and many amenities we expected to enjoy simply were not available. It also felt like the resort prioritized companies hosting work retreats over individual guests, which detracted from the overall experience. There were additional fees for nearly everything, yet very little value provided in return. The WiFi was extremely unreliable, and the televisions were outdated and difficult to use. For a resort at this price point, these issues were frustrating and unacceptable. When we asked staff about discounts or passes for local attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, we were told they “couldn’t access them,” which was not helpful and felt dismissive rather than accommodating. The only real highlight of the property is its location, which is undeniably beautiful. However, a pretty setting alone does not justify the cost or compensate for the lack of amenities, service, and overall resort experience. We would not recommend this property to others and would not choose to stay here again.

Kona Kai Resort & Spa offers a relaxing coastal escape that blends laid-back luxury with beautiful marina and waterfront views. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere feels calm and inviting, making it an ideal destination for both leisure travelers and couples looking to unwind. The rooms are well-appointed, clean, and comfortable, with modern décor and thoughtful touches that enhance the stay. Many rooms offer scenic views of the marina or bay, which adds to the overall resort experience. The grounds are beautifully maintained, featuring lush landscaping, walking paths, and inviting outdoor spaces to relax or enjoy the sunshine. One of the highlights of Kona Kai is the pool area, which provides a true resort vibe with plenty of seating and a tranquil ambiance. The spa is another standout, offering a variety of treatments that are perfect for rest and rejuvenation. On-site dining options are convenient and enjoyable, with quality food and a pleasant atmosphere, especially for sunset dining. The location is also a major plus—secluded enough to feel peaceful, yet close enough to nearby attractions, dining, and activities. The staff is friendly, attentive, and professional, consistently making guests feel welcomed and well cared for throughout their stay. Overall, Kona Kai Resort & Spa is a wonderful choice for travelers seeking a serene, upscale getaway with beautiful views, excellent amenities, and a true resort experience. Whether for a weekend retreat or an extended stay, it delivers comfort, relaxation, and coastal charm.

I reserved/paid for a Marina view King junior suite, what I got is a view of the top of a dirty tent. They tell me this room is in the same category, I would have a view if I was on a higher floor - if another room comes up they will move me? Typically with Amex or Venture X we get early check-in and they will upgrade our room if possible - this room was down graded and they did get us a room by 3:15 instead of 4 but it’s dirty… see photos. The bathroom and surfaces were not wiped down and especially not disinfected. I can tell at one time this was a nice hotel, I guess ownership changed or it’s not managed well. While waiting to check in several customers complained at the front desk. I am not blaming this hotel entirely, Amex and Venture X list this as a premier hotel or part of their elite collection which we rely on for a positive experience, they need to remove this place as there is no comparison. It is not a 4 star hotel. And definitely not worth 500 a night. Please look at the images it’s just not worth it. This was a vacation not a desperate situation for a place to sleep. What you will see next is their management using ChatGPT to write a thank you for my review and how they are sorry for my experience. No one should be billed 2k for this type of service…..

I usually never write reviews but this experience was so horrible I felt the need to warn others. We booked this hotel for our wedding weekend expecting a nice stay, and it was a huge letdown. This is nowhere near a 4-star hotel more like a Motel 6 (actually worse). Everything was super outdated and the walls in the rooms were literally peeling off. Not to mention the elevator wasn’t even working. Therefore we had to carry all our luggage up the stairs. The icing on top was the fact they charged almost $50 just to park?! The staff was unhelpful and rude, both on the phone and at check-in, and there was a long line with zero direction or friendliness when we arrived. Not to mention they try to charge you for every little thing with ridiculous fees and hidden costs, and the price is absolutely not worth it. The only redeeming factor is the location. Overall, a terrible experience. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone.

I rarely leave reviews. When I do, it is because an experience deviates so clearly from expectations that prospective guests deserve an honest account. This is one of those cases. This property falls well short of what one would expect from a hotel participating in the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts program. From check in to departure, the experience felt transactional and defensive rather than welcoming, with policies, disclaimers, and fees taking priority over hospitality. The hotel itself is dated, with inconsistent maintenance and functionality issues in the rooms. Common areas and accessibility details were lacking, and the departure process was unnecessarily complicated. Communication was poor, including never receiving a final bill. The dining experience reinforced the same theme. Arrival and seating were poorly handled, basic items ran out, and the food was unremarkable. What stood out most were the added fees. A 20 percent service charge plus an additional 5 percent surcharge for a buffet felt unreasonable and emblematic of a broader nickel and diming approach. This was further compounded by an expensive resort fee and parking fee, charged as if this were an exclusive luxury resort, despite the property and service level not supporting that positioning. To be fair, the below-the-line staff, including housekeeping, wait staff, and support personnel, were consistently friendly, professional, and hardworking. They were the bright spot of the stay. Overall, this property appears more focused on extracting fees than delivering a refined guest experience. Travelers booking through premium programs should be aware that the quality and hospitality here do not align with the expectations those programs imply. ***Edit after the hotel response.*** A general manager using ChatGPT to respond to reviews speaks volumes about why the hotel has the negative reviews it does. I assume that's also why there are check in kiosks in the lobby. Another cheap impersonal touch. Training starts from the top and obviously they like to phone it in. Again I would read the negative reviews and take note of the consistent complaints throughout. Also check your bills(if you actually get one). You'll have to ask multiple times for it.
