I’m genuinely surprised by the high rating for Next Level Escape Rooms after our experience in the Graveyard room. The premise sounded interesting at first, we were told we needed to cure the town’s curse. Beyond the short intro speech, there was essentially no story development. No additional audio cues, no unfolding narrative, nothing that tied our progress into the theme. Even the end was just us escaping and never curing the town's curse. The ambient noise even cut out rather early on and turned into a loud buzzing, which completely broke immersion and made it difficult to work on certain puzzles were we had to listen to quiet sounds. The biggest issue was the puzzle design. The room felt extremely linear. We had four people, but only one person could meaningfully interact with anything at a time while the other three stood around waiting. In most escape rooms I’ve done in Toronto, Birmingham (Alabama), and Victoria (British Columbia) there are multiple puzzle paths that allow people to split up and work collaboratively, with threads coming together at the end. That way if you are stumped on one puzzle there's usually something else that can be worked on. Here, we were constantly blocked, waiting on a single task before anyone else could proceed which made it feel like this was designed for 1 or 2 people rather than 4. The puzzle connections also didn’t make sense. There were moments where solutions linked together with no clear hint, environmental cue, sound, or visual indicator suggesting they were related. Afterward with the candle puzzle in particular, I asked staff where the hint was supposed to be, and there really wasn’t one. Some mechanisms didn’t work consistently either, even when the staff member demonstrated them after the game. One person in our group left partway through because she wasn’t enjoying herself. I considered leaving too but stayed to see it through. We were told we’d receive hints if we fell too far behind, yet when time ran out we weren’t even halfway through. When I raised these concerns, the response I received was essentially, “It’s not for everyone, I guess,” which felt dismissive rather than constructive. I’ve done many escape rooms, and this one felt poorly thought out, overly linear, mechanically inconsistent, and lacking narrative payoff. I cannot recommend this room based on our experience, but this review does not speak for any other rooms as I have yet to try them however after this and based on the responses from the staff I am not sure that I intend to try any other rooms from this company.
