General Grant Tree

The second-largest tree in the world. The General Grant Tree is not one of the oldest, but it has the advantage of growing in a spot with bright sunlight and plenty of water, so it grew larger quickly. It holds two additional titles: the Nation's Christmas Tree (not the National Christmas Tree, which gets decorated in Washington, D.C.) and the country's only living national shrine. The General Grant Trail is an easy, 0.5 mile loop through the Grant Grove of sequoias. Tree Facts Height: 268.1 feet (88.7 meters) Ground circumference: 107.5 feet (32.8 meters) Trunk volume: 46,608 cubic feet (1320 cubic meters) You can also visit the historic Gamlin Cabin and walk inside the Fallen Monarch sequoia as you travel along this paved trail. Wayside exhibits along the trail offer insights into the history and natural wonders of this area in both English and Spanish. After you witness these giant sequoias, you can also explore other nearby groves, such as Redwood Mountain and North Grove. Safety The Grant Tree Trail is a good choice in winter, as long as you're prepared. If trail conditions are icy, you may wish to use snowshoes, which are available for rent at the Grant Grove Gift Shop (check for final decision on availability). Location The General Grant Trail is one mile from the Kings Canyon Visitor Center. The trailhead begins in the General Grant parking lot. Drive down Grant Tree Road one mile north from the Kings Canyon Visitor Center. Parking A large parking lot with overflow parking is available at the trailhead.
