Tunnel Log

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks

Since 1935, people have been driving through Tunnel Log. You too can join in on the novelty of driving through a fallen Sequoia.

Soon after the Moro Rock / Crescent Meadow Road was completed, a giant sequoia fell, blocking the roadway. The tree was too large to move, so workers carved a tunnel through it. Since 1935, people have been driving through Tunnel Log. Now you can join in on the novelty of driving through a fallen Sequoia. Vehicles taller than 8 feet (2.4 m) can use a bypass. A different tree you can drive through: Tunnel Log is made of a fallen horizontal sequoia tree. Many who think of the living sequoia tree you can drive through is located in Mariposa Grove in nearby Yosemite National Park. However, the famous standing tunnel tree in Yosemite collapsed in 1969. Learn more about the Myth of the Tree You Can Drive Through. Winter Visits: To access this area in winter, you will need to hike, snowshoe, or ski into the area. Safety Please be aware that parking at Tunnel Log is very tight and limited. Arrive early or return at a later time if the parking lot is full. Please do not stop in the road to get pictures. Be aware of other vehicles passing through. Be respectful of one another. Location Drive down Moro Rock / Crescent Meadow Road by the entrance to the Giant Forest Museum. Tunnel Log is located just 0.5 mile (0.8 km) past Moro Rock. On weekends, the road closes to private vehicles and shuttles are the only way to reach Moro Rock and Crescent Meadow. On weekdays, the road remains open, but the small parking area may be full. Parking There are no formal parking spots at Tunnel Log, but small turnouts along the side of the feature. In summer, free shuttles run from Giant Forest Museum to the Moro Rock parking area.
