Plum Orchard Mansion was built in 1898 by Lucy Carnegie for her son, George Lauder Carnegie, as a wedding present. This home reflects an opulent era in the island's history; one of recreation, relaxation, and time spent with family. This Visitors today can join a ranger for a 45-minutes tour of this 22,000 square foot home for a glimpse of such times.
Plum Orchard Mansion was built in 1898 by Lucy Carnegie for her son, George Lauder Carnegie, as a wedding present. The esteemed Boston-based architectural firm Peabody and Stearns was employed for its construction. This home reflects an opulent era in the island's history; one of recreation, relaxation, and time spent with family. Tour times are 11:00 AM, 1:00PM, and 2:00 PM and last about 45 minutes. Docents will begin the tour from the mansion's front door/ porch. There are public restrooms on site. Tours cover the first and second floors and basement. *Tour capacity is reduced to 10 people per tour. Masks are optional inside the mansion. **Getting to Plum Orchard is not an easy task. Located 7 miles North of the Sea Camp dock, visitors are responsible for traveling the distance on bike or on foot (hiking the 14 mile round trip is not recommended for day visitors). ***Public dock at Plum Orchard is open from sunrise to sunset, is first come first serve and is available for boats under 25-feet. ****Plum Orchard is closed during managed hunts on the island. Hunts are held October through January each year. Check the managed hunts page to see if this may impact your visit. Lands & Legacies tours will not be impacted by this closure.

Tours last about 45 minutes. The front door will be opened 15 minutes prior to each tour, and for 30 minutes following the final tour, allowing visitors to step into the “Great Hall”.
Plum Orchard Tour is free. All visitors 16 or older must pay the park entry fee or have an America the Beautiful pass with them. Fees can be paid on the island at self-pay stations located at each dock or in person at the Mainland Visitor Center. You may also pay your entrance fee in advance online at www.pay.gov.
