I called to see about having them refile my 2023 taxes because H&R Block filed state to the wrong state. I explained to the receptionist what the issue was and how much VA was saying we owed (husband pay CT taxes, not VA). She said we had to put down a $250 ‘retainer’ deposit. He called and we spent about 5, MAYBE 10 minutes on the phone together. During that time he told me it would cost $500 to refile with him and I owed VA $500, so I should just pay it. Okay - no problem. I called to get my retainer back though. I mean I have a lawyer, I’ve been divorced, I know how retainers work. I wasn’t using him, I should get $250 minus a whole 5 minute phone call. I called and inquired twice and both times she said she would look into it and call me back. The third time, I was then told it’s actually not a retainer, it’s just his “fee”. I told the receptionist that’s a really shotty business practice. To tell people you can help, take a “retainer”, then tell them you can’t help, and keep the retainer? She said she definitely understood and would call back.. well I never heard anything else from them. Honestly almost feels fraudulent. I think I’m going to file a complaint, but I also wanted to warn people not to ever put a “retainer” down until you talk to him and confirm he will work on your issue.
