First time coming to this location. It’s very clean and organized. Went to Starbucks to get a drink while a shopped. The 2 young ladies that work at Starbucks inside are kinda rude. I stood there for a minute and they both walked past me. No greeting, no nothing. Please work on your customer service ladies. People won’t wanna come back when you’re acting that way.
We witnessed a really unfortunate interaction between a customer and Angy, (spelling?) one of the managers. She confronted him about leaning in a chair he was sitting in against the back wall while reading and continued to escalate the situation, telling him he was looking at her the wrong way and threatening to kick him out of the store. He asked her to call security or the police to escort him out so there would be a record of her doing this. Both had raised their voices and she kept coming back to the man saying he couldn’t be talking to other customers and telling him he couldn’t use vulgar “language” in her store. The only word he said that could be considered vulgar was “damn.” She seemed intent on escalating the situation. Once the police arrived he complied with them asking him to leave and everything was extremely calm and he was very courteous with the two officers. It’s disappointing how quickly the manager escalated the situation instead of just leaving him alone in the first place when there were plenty of other customers she could have been helping. It was clear she singled him out and wanted to flex her authority on someone. Hopefully this is an isolated incident but based on how she spoke to him I would be surprised if it was. She was a middle aged white woman and the customer a middle aged African American man which only adds to how unfortunate this situation was. Seeing as how submitting feedback to Barnes and Noble needs to be routes through managers and a manager was at the center of this interaction hoping that this review will make her concerning behavior visible.
Not a welcoming environment for Jewish people. First, why is all the Christmas 50% off but not the Hanukkah items? I asked an employee and he could not explain this discrepancy. Why is a book about Auschwitz being cheapened by a book about Gaza - the presentation suggests they are comparable on a special display. They aren’t, and it’s things like this which to Holocaust denial and the ridiculous false narratives about Gaza. The Jewish books upstairs in the religion section (one shelf only) were hidden as someone had covered them with books about Ramadan. More erasure of the Jewish experience and making it harder for Jewish people to connect and celebrate Jewish culture. It’s sadly not surprising that B&N has embraced the dangerous anti-Semitic movement, but I will never spend another dollar at this store. You should think about who your customers in River Oaks are… What a disgrace.
My family and I come here often. My kids absolutely love this location. The toy selection upstairs combined with the excellent kids books means we end up here at least once a month. It's a very clean, well organized location and the cafe has a solid selection.
Barnes & Noble is a cozy escape for book lovers, offering a perfect mix of good coffee, endless shelves, and peaceful vibes that make you want to stay all day.
