This is a Toledo institution. The selection is top notch & with a ton of uncommon houseplants that you don't find anywhere else. Prices are low and the owner is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. There is a seasonal greenhouse for planting your vegetable garden in the spring, but I highly recommend going in the winter. Nothing beats the warmth and humidity while checking out the greenery on a winter's day.
I've driven down Dorr street for the passed 20+ years and never noticed Bensell until about 2 years ago (2023) when a very good friend of mine took me for the first time. The saying about the best shops being a hidden gem, that's Bensell! Every time we go I always find great plants at great prices, and the owners are very knowledgeable, kind, and very helpful. There are only a few greenhouses in town I'll shop at and Bensell is usually my first go to.
Favorite place to buy plants in Toledo! The plants are affordable, they have some great finds, and helpful friendly staff. It’s tucked away a bit but it’s there and worth it!
Had the best experience shopping here today! Everything from the service to the plant selection was incredible and the two people who helped me out were the sweetest. I wasn’t exactly sure what I was looking for when I came in, and am not always the best at maintaining plants (whoops) but left absolutely in love with my plant and feeling confident about its care. I’m already looking forward to going back for another! If you’re in the area, it’s a must!
**updated** I visited today and I just have to reiterate how much I love this greenhouse. We purchased a patio lime tree, and I mentioned to the awesome owner that this was our first fruit tree. She gave us so many great tips! She is so knowledgeable about plants, and so willing to share and help. I will keep buying plants here, and driving from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to do so. It’s totally worth the drive. 😊 Open year round, this is a favorite place to find old favorites and some harder-to-find plants. There’s a fantastic selection of cacti and succulents, as well as herbs and outdoor plants. The owner often gives very helpful tips on plant care. 😊
