Visited Tipo 00 last weekend and was pleasantly surprised to get a walk-in seat at the bar, despite how busy the restaurant usually is. We started with the complimentary focaccia and feta, which was simple and enjoyable as a starter. For our entrée, we ordered the grilled ox tongue based on recommendations. It was sliced thin and nicely grilled, with a crisp exterior and tender texture. My partner particularly enjoyed this dish. For mains, we followed the waitress’s recommendations and ordered the signature squid ink tagiolini along with the seasonal paccheri with scampi and mussels. Both pastas were well cooked and highlighted fresh seafood flavours. However, we did find the overall flavour profile between the two dishes quite similar. While the paccheri stood out slightly more in terms of texture and the squid ink pasta was lighter and more delicate, it may have been nice to have a bit more contrast between the recommendations. Overall, a solid and reliable Italian dining experience with good-quality ingredients and classic flavours. A safe choice in the CBD for italian cuisine.
It is hands down one of the best Italian spots I’ve ever dined at. Tucked away on Little Bourke Street in the CBD, the cozy, buzzing atmosphere hits you right away—the open kitchen lets you watch chefs rolling fresh pasta and tossing sauces like pros, making the whole place feel alive and authentic. We started with the bread, which was warm and crusty, perfect for dipping into their house-made olive oil. The pappardelle with braised duck ragu was melt-in-your-mouth tender, rich but balanced. For dessert, the Tipomisu stole the show—a genius twist on tiramisu with coffee liqueur and mascarpone that was creamy, boozy perfection. friendly staff who were helpful and explaining the dishes. Really recommended
This has been on my list for years, so I was excited to finally visit on a beautiful summer day for lunch. Overall, the experience was largely very positive, though the service didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had for a venue of this calibre. Given how popular and well-regarded Tipo 00 is, I was anticipating a warmer, more attentive welcome. Nothing overtly negative happened, but the initial greeting felt a little abrupt — being asked to wait outside rather than welcomed in wasn’t the best first impression. That said, the service did improve as the meal went on, particularly when we were looked after by one of the male staff members, who was far friendlier and more attentive. Dining as a pair, we decided to treat ourselves. We started with a glass of red wine each and a serve of oysters, followed by complimentary focaccia with ricotta on the side — a lovely touch. For mains, we ordered the spaghetti with heirloom zucchini, lovage and pistachio, the gnocchi di patate with wild boar ragù, saffron and broad beans, and planned to share a third pasta: the tagliolini al nero with squid ink, squid and bottarga. When we mentioned we were sharing the squid ink dish, the waiter suggested bringing it out as an entrée — and it arrived thoughtfully split into two bowls, which we really appreciated. Of all the pastas, the squid ink tagliolini was the clear standout. Unique, perfectly balanced and executed beautifully, it completely stole the show. I’ll absolutely be returning just for that dish alone. Despite the slightly underwhelming start, the food is undeniably exceptional and very much lives up to the hype.
We had late lunch and the atmosphere was joyful. The zucchini flowers were melt in your mouth delicious. We ordered the scampi paccheri and the braised duck pappardelle and we devoured both dishes. To describe this food is it will take you to Italy and you will feel like you are being served a home cooked meal. Put this on your bucket list to come and enjoy some amazing Melbourne food.
My family and I were in Melbourne for a week and there were no reservations but we were lucky enough to nab a table as a walk in and we were not disappointed. Tipo00 lives up to the hype. We had a great waitress from NZ. The food oh the food. It was faultless. It was delicious. The flavours were incredible. I love this place. The chef's really know what they are doing and that reflects in the dishes. The produce they used was excellent. For such a small kitchen the dishes are superb. This place deserves the excellent reputation it has. Thank you Tipo00. You more than hit the spot x
