I love this bookstore and am so glad to live in the same city as them, they have a warm and personal atmosphere, fabulous staff, and a thoughtful selection of books across genres. Their events are also a cornerstone of the local literary scene - feels like a place where community gathers and creativity can grow as people connect with each other. Recommend giving them a visit if you are in Edinburgh!
On Christmas Day, I was walking through streets where almost every shop was closed, I was surprised to find an open bookshop. I went in and was warmly welcomed, then served lentil soup, lovely wine, and beautiful loaves of bread- one of the loveliest random experiences I’ve had in Edinburgh. I bought a book (they even have their own stamp, if you approve, which I certainly did) and received a free bookmark and origami. Such a special place…
Small independent book store with great books and a passionate, knowledgeable and friendly staff, on a mission to get authors published and what you want to read. A visit along with McNaughtans next door makes for a complete book shopping experience.
This bookshop was definitely the highlight of my day. The vibes were just amazing! Cozy and quirky! Plus the staff gave me an elephant origami after buying a book! If I could give this place a 6 stars I would.
After discovering Typewronger Books on TikTok, I made a special trip into the area just to visit this charming bookstore. Tucked away in a cozy basement space on Haddington Place, Typewronger shares its location with McNaughtan’s, Scotland’s oldest antiquarian bookshop. The name “Typewronger” is a delightful play on words, reflecting the shop’s unique focus on both books and vintage typewriters. In fact, it’s the only typewriter repair shop in Scotland, boasting a collection of over 100 typewriters spanning more than a century. The person running the store was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, engaging me in conversations about books, printing, and even the best ways to enjoy a whiskey. Their passion for literature and vintage technology was truly infectious. I ended up purchasing several books, and as a special touch, they crafted a tiny origami dragon for me to take home. It’s a tradition at Typewronger for staff to create origami animals for customers, adding a personal and whimsical element to the shopping experience. Beyond its unique offerings, Typewronger operates as a not-for-profit community interest company, with profits supporting various causes. The shop also hosts literary events, open mic nights, and zine-making workshops, fostering a vibrant community for readers and writers alike. If you find yourself in Edinburgh, I highly recommend stopping by Typewronger Books. It’s more than just a bookstore; it’s a haven for literary enthusiasts and a testament to the enduring charm of print and typewriters.
