Our experience at this hospital has unfortunately not been a positive one, despite its reputation as one of the best children’s hospitals. While it is well known for being a large, downtown Chicago facility, size and location do not equal quality of care. I had to switch my daughter’s GI care back to Lurie Children’s due to their access to motility specialists, but even then, our experience has been disappointing. It often feels like there is a lack of clear direction and confidence in her care. Some nurses are truly wonderful and compassionate, but others appear disengaged, unhappy, and not suited to work with children. When calling to check on my daughter, the staff answering the phones often sound miserable and act as if it’s an inconvenience. This is especially difficult for parents who are already under immense stress caring for sick children. A little kindness and empathy would go a long way in a children’s hospital. Communication has also been a major issue. Doctors rarely speak directly with parents; instead, residents relay information but are often unable to answer questions or provide clarity. This leaves families confused and waiting until a senior doctor eventually calls back. Even then, the information provided often feels vague, inconsistent, or like we’re being given the runaround. Overall, this experience has been frustrating and disheartening. Families come here expecting expertise, compassion, and clear communication—especially when their child has complex medical needs—and unfortunately, that has not been our experience.
We are beyond grateful to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and the incredible care our daughter, Maggie, received. She underwent a spinal fusion surgery yesterday under the leadership of Dr. Sarwark and his outstanding surgical team, and the experience exceeded every expectation. From start to finish, the professionalism, compassion, and expertise shown by the doctors, nurses, and hospital administrators were truly remarkable. Every member of the team went above and beyond to ensure Maggie’s safety, comfort, and well-being, while also supporting us as parents during a very emotional time. There are truly no words that can fully express our gratitude for the exceptional care, dedication, and kindness we witnessed. Lurie Children’s Hospital is a world-class institution, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have entrusted our daughter to such an amazing team.
I wish to express my gratitude for the whole Stem cell team, the 17th and 18th floor. My child recently had a bone marrow transplant, and I have only words of praise for the staff: for all the doctors, palliative team, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, nursing assistants, child life members, social worker, physical, occupational and musical therapists, and even the 17th floor receptionists (sorry, I forgot how they are actually called). The whole journey seemed extremely scary prior to admission, but with everyone’s comfort and support, things were smooth and they took real good care of my son, they were constantly checking on him and on our family, in those dark times it meant a lot. Our questions and concerns were always addressed, and I have never seen such expertise before, although we have dealt with a lot of doctors and hospitals. Special thank you to Dr. Chaudhury, you and your team are really incredible. And all the love for the 17th floor nurses, you make a big difference with your skills and compassion.
I brought my daughter to Lurie Children’s Hospital, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the care she received. The doctors and nurses were truly amazing — patient, compassionate, and very knowledgeable. They treated my daughter like their own and made sure we were comfortable and informed every step of the way. The entire staff went above and beyond to make what could have been a stressful experience so much easier. I highly recommend this hospital to any parent looking for the best medical care for their child. Thank you to the entire team for your kindness and professionalism! 💖
Thank you to the whole team from the bottom of my heart. It wasn’t by choice that we came here, but we spent it with peace and confidence, trusting in the experience and knowledge of everyone around us. You bring light, and may God help you in your work. A special thanks to Professor Anthony Chin – you are truly amazing.
