I didn't realize I've never reviewed this place. I used to live down the road, and this is easily the nicest liquor store in miles from it. When I say that I mean it's extremely well kept and the staff is full of people I've come to enjoy seeing (I'm aware they're just working, they're still consistently nice to me though). Honestly, it's just a great place to go.
They are small, but they are mighty and complement the other great establishments located on this beautiful stretch of Downer Avenue. If you want something that they don't carry or don't have in stock, they'll find it for you to the best of their abilities. Great prices for a small local store, and the people there are both knowledgeable and personable. It was kismet being reunited with Steve after not seeing him since about 1980 - great memories of a great guy and now I get the chance to chat with him more frequently after all these years. Y'all definitely have my business!
The people who run this store are less shopkeepers than they are curators. The store is really small. But it is chock a block full of extraordinary products. Some of them are quite expensive. But most are very affordable. They'll order you nearly anything that you desire. Their depth of knowledge is extraordinary. And they're actually very nice people. If you're going to buy booze, why not buy it from really cool people who love what they do? Update 14 Nov 22-- better than ever!
Downer Wine & Spirits is great for a small, local liquor store. The selection is vast, from beer and wine to bourbon/whiskey, tequila and more - and the prices are fair. The staff is helpful, give their suggestions on what they think is better from experience, even if what they're suggesting isn't top shelf. Awesome local store, I visit often and hope they continue to grow a broader selection of whiskeys.
