We are so lucky to have this spot in San Diego. Most sushi restaurants in town are fusion, bending to American tastes, but Kokoro transports you to the traditional way of sushi. Pure, simple, and beautiful! Chef prepared the nigiri with the perfect amount of soy sauce, sometimes topping with ginger, wasabi, or salt, every piece was perfect. The rice was plump and delicious and the mackerel was the best I've had, bold flavor and a fattiness that made it melt in the mouth. Another quiet standout was the sea bream and mushroom soup — I wish I could have this broth on tap all the time. Lastly, our server was so kind and welcoming and the dishware is so pretty. We will definitely come back and tell our friends about this special place.
Every course is absolutely amazing. Highlights are the Matsutake mushroom soup and the aged toro temaki. Personal opinion it’s better than Sushi Tadokoro.
Walked in here without a reservation and ordered the Omakase. I was surprised that the place wasn't packed as the Omakase was absolutely delicious. Every dish was well presented, and tasted amazing. There wasn't a single item that wasn't good. I highly recommend Kokoro if you're looking for an under the radar spot for some good sushi.
Authentic and Heartfelt Omakase Kokoro is a truly special place. Unlike modern omakase trends that focus on flashy presentations, the chef stays true to tradition, letting the natural flavors and textures shine. His ice-preserving techniques take the fish to the next level. What touched me the most was how he accommodated my request for no rice. Instead of just serving the fish as-is, he carefully adjusted each piece—sliced halibut, diced toro, seaweed-wrapped eel—showing incredible thoughtfulness and skill. Celebrating our second anniversary here made it even more meaningful. This was my boyfriend’s favorite spot during college, and coming back felt like a homecoming. The chef’s dedication is truly inspiring. Kokoro is more than just a meal—it’s an experience from the heart.
Really cute and authentic Japanese restaurant. I have meant to take my wife over to get some decent and delicious sushi bowls. Overall, I enjoyed the whole experience. Our waitress and sushi chef were so friendly and attentive. but it is on a pricier side even for lunch menu. I also wish the sushi and eel can be fresher than other places I tried. Just me but I should probably try their dinner menu to really judge this place properly.
