Update: Got the Non veg Pongal Virundhu (for 2) and it was an absolute experience and food was more than enough for 2. Thank you team Mathampatty for the absolute experience. Loved the food and ambience! One of the best food joints that brings the true flavor of Tamil Nadu to the United States! Book your seats in advance to avoid long wait times. Parking can be crowded during weekend.
Good Indian food in a quiet and comfortable ambience. We particularly like the butter dosa, the butter milk has distinct flavor that tastes more like sour milk. The chicken biryani is tasty. The mutton meatballs are quite dry however. One of us has nut allergy and it turns out the curry dish uses cashew and some sauce uses cashew, so we hope that the restaurant will call out on the menu. We asked to check if other dishes have nuts, the manager did not get back and we asked another waiter who needed to check with the kitchen. Something to keep in mind if you are allergic and want to try the dishes here.
We tried the Thanksgiving Non-Veg Special Meal at Kongunadu in San Jose and it was absolutely outstanding. Every single item on the thali was flavorful, fresh, and perfectly prepared. The Turkey Pepper Fry and Kongu Chicken Varuval were the stars—authentic spices, great texture, and full of rich Kongu-nadu flavors. The Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani was aromatic and perfectly cooked, and the side dishes like Pacha Puli Rasam, Spinach Kootu, Veg Salna, and Pollachi Chicken Kulambu balanced the meal beautifully. Even the simpler parts of the thali—steamed rice, curd, appalam, and the delicious Badam Halwa—were made with care and tasted fantastic. For $24.99, the portion size and the variety offered were totally worth it. Entire thali was excellent. Highly recommended!
The moment you walk in, you feel the comfort of homestyle food mixed with the bold flavors of the Kongu region. The menu is packed with authentic dishes that are not very common in other restaurants, and everything is prepared with a lot of care. The standout items are the Kothu Parotta, Nattu Kozhi dishes, Pallipalayam Chicken, and their unique biryanis. The spice level is balanced and every bite has clean flavors without too much oil. The parottas are soft and layered, the gravies taste homemade, and the meat is cooked perfectly. Even simple items like rasam, sambar, and veg meals feel very close to traditional Tamil home cooking. Service is quick, the staff is polite, and the place is very clean. The food arrives hot, and even during busy hours they maintain quality. The pricing is reasonable for the portions you get, and the taste easily makes it worth it. If you are missing authentic Kongu Tamil Nadu flavors or if you want to try something beyond the regular dosa and idli routine, this place is a must visit. It is a true comfort food spot in San Jose and a top choice for anyone who loves regional South Indian cuisine.
Everything exceeded our expectations. We ordered chicken and mutton biriyani. It was jeerakasmba rice with great meat flavor. Felt quite easy on the stomach. Less oil, less masala but still flavorful. For desserts we tried Elaneer karupatti halwa and Jigarthanda shot, they both were great. The service was top notch. Our server Bunni was so good, he patiently explained us the dishes and made some good recommendations. Overall food and service felt quite homely. We had a great experience and definitely coming back to try more items and great hospitality.
