We were invited to this sushi bar by a couple of our friends. I’m not usually a big sushi fan, but I could honestly feel the difference in quality here, and I’d definitely recommend it. Unfortunately, the wait time was really long. I’m not sure if it was a glitch in their system or just a random mix-up, but people who arrived after us got served before we did. Later, I found out they have an app you can use to reserve in advance, which probably would’ve helped. In any case, the wait was super long, the sushi was so good that I’m glad we stuck it out. It was worth the wait! So here’s something else to add: this sushi bar had a kind of high-tech ordering process. Instead of a server taking your order in person and just bringing everything out at once, we were ordering piece by piece. Since we were sitting by the bar, we’d get each sushi order directly handed to us, and we’d place it on the table ourselves. It was a bit of a challenge for me because I’m used to just giving my order once and having everything brought out in a traditional way. Also, if you’re planning to split the bill among friends, it can get really complicated because of how the ordering is done in little increments. the service button to call the server was slow they were so busy, and it took them a while to come over. But, the sushi quality was high enough that I’d go back again; I’d just try to streamline the ordering process next time!
The wait can be long. I wanted about 30 minutes, but thats definitely on the shorter side. I have definitely seen 2 hour wait times. The service is very nice, but I only interacted with a person when I got seated, got my drink, and when it was last call. Itcan get loud with the gachas going off, the little rooms playing their music, the dings of the computer, cracking of plating going in the shoot, and overall chatter. Definitely a fun thing to go with groups, but can get expensive with each plate at this time being $3.95 if you don't keep in mind how many plates you eat. Still its a good price for sushi that ok. It's not great or wow, but it definitely hits the craving, or you can try something new without breaking the bank. Which is why I gave the food 3 stars. It's perfectly average, but fun. It also comes out pretty quickly when you order it. The little toy you get for eating 15 plates is gimmick, of course, but I fall for it everytime and I love. Great for families of older kids, couples, friend groups, or even solo, like I did.
This place is always busy, so I wanted to see what all the hype is about! You definitely have to reserve a spot or join the waitlist early if you don’t want to wait in line too long. There were interesting dishes, and I split each 2 piece dish with a friend! Some were limited catches to the season, so the menu does change once in a while. The fish were fresh and the portions were generous. We got seven dishes total and were pretty full after that. However, the quality and taste were pretty similar to any other sushi place in SD, so I don’t think it’s worth the parking and wait, unless you really enjoy the revolving aspect. The one thing that made my experience a bit unpleasant was the strong wet toilet smell where we were sitting :( Staff were helpful and attentive, and explained how ordering worked well. Parking sucks, as how it normally is in Convoy, and drivers are especially aggressive in the compact part of the lots. Your best bet would either be the free street parking in the back, or paid parking in the structure.
When you go to Kura, know that you're primarily going for the touch of fun and the variety. Is it the best sushi in San Diego? No, but it is decent, especially at such a low price point. Kura can be a lot of fun for the conveyer belt sushi experience, and since every dish is a small serving, it lets you try plenty of different items. If you have someone in your party who isn't sold on sushi, they also have a variety of other dishes, including ramen, udon, and tempura. You can request a fresh order of anything on the belt as well. The restaurant typically isn't too loud, and the booths are separated with high dividers so it's nice to feel like your party has a little privacy. The waits can be long so it's worth making a reservation during busy times. We've often been seated shortly after checking in for our reservation, even if we're a little early.
The vibes were there, but the food just didn’t quite hit for me. Potentially didn’t grab the freshest rolls. The system is fairly organized, and we got sat on schedule. Service was friendly, and having a robot was a cute touch. Might have to give it another chance.
