Visited Mama’s on Washington Square for brunch and was honestly very disappointed, especially considering how much we paid and the long wait. The overall food quality was below average. The French toast was overly sweet and the bread didn’t seem cooked properly — it still tasted eggy inside. The desserts were excessively sweet and not balanced at all. The vegetable sandwich was extremely basic and disappointing; the bread wasn’t even toasted and it felt like a cold, rushed sandwich rather than a proper dish. Given the waiting time, price, and food quality, the experience was a total letdown. I wouldn’t say the food justifies the hype or the cost.
Mama’s consistently delivers a best in class dining experience with standout execution across the menu. The Montecristo sandwich is rich, perfectly balanced, and cooked to absolute perfection. The Washington Square omelette is exceptional, fluffy, flavorful, and clearly made with quality ingredients and attention to detail. To close it out, the cake crumble is outstanding, indulgent without being overwhelming and the ideal finish to the meal. From entrée to dessert, everything feels intentional and well curated. This place is operating at a very high level and continues to exceed expectations. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy comfort food done right.
Great spot for brunch in north beach! The line moves quickly but can be confusing- line up outside and they’ll call you in when ready. Then line up at the counter until it’s your turn to order. The menu is spread across several spots and it can be difficult to read with the guests, staff, and shelving in the way. You order and pay before sitting down. Sometimes there isn’t a table so you need to find a spot to awkwardly stand while the staff tries to get around you. The food itself is good! Nothing crazy. I love the pancakes. The omelet was good and had tons of bacon inside. The real standout was the homemade jam. It’s phenomenal! I could drink it. Worth a try if you’re in the neighborhood.
TLDR; great, popular breakfast spot! I came here to grab breakfast with a friend while visiting the city, We stopped by for breakfast. It was fairly busy even on a Wednesday morning. Service was quick — you take a seat then order at the counter. The restaurant wears its status as an institution in its decor — there’s a lot of cool art/decoration. The food itself was great. The lemonade was good and not too sweet. The French roast sampler was great as well. The variety was really cool to see and unlike anything else I’ve had. They also offer a house jam that’s delicious. Would go here again! Next time, I’ll try more savory options. My friend mentioned that the omelets are some of the best he’s had.
Mama’s is a true SF brunch classic, and I finally tried their crab cake benedict — so good. The crab cakes were fresh and flavorful, topped with perfectly poached eggs and creamy hollandaise that wasn’t too heavy. Portions are generous and it’s super filling. The vibe inside is cozy and bustling, with that old-school North Beach charm. The wait can be long, but sitting right by Washington Square makes it less painful. If you’re in San Francisco and don’t mind a line, Mama’s is a must for a satisfying brunch.
