Go to this place for the experience, atmosphere and service! It is located in a "hole in the wall" spot. The restaurant is a long standing family run eatery and serves up a mixture of typical diner options as well as Chinese wontons. Walking into the diner and sitting down you'll feel time transported back a few decades. Customers eating there are an eclectic mixture of locals working close by, people living nearby, and the foodie tourists. On the walls, you can see all the comments that people from around the world have written about the place. Solid food with good flavours. Tried the famous wonton soup and they are tasty as well. Value is about average compared to most restaurants nowadays. Service is top notch, very attentive and friendly. There was a line to get in around 11:30 on a weekday but the wait is not too long. It can get a bit slow waiting for food when it is busy. There is absolutely no parking onsite. Can not park in the lumber yard as you'll get towed. There are open areas along the side of Kent Avenue but they are tight and it is crowded in that part of the city.
Based on the reviews I expected more. The wonton soup was good but not the best in Vancouver and while the salmon eggs benny had lots of fish the hash browns were not good at all. Avoid the coffee. Pancakes were fine. The prices are on par with better places that are more convenient. Nice staff.
Amazing place hidden away. This is a word of mouth place. The owner's son was very nice had a great conversation with him about the history of the place his father started as a hobby he loves. He even still cooks there. Unfortunately he was on vacation when we went. Amazing food top notch I would say the best breakfast place I have been to. Had breakfast sandwich that you dipped in a sauce like hollendaise sauce was amazing flavor 😋. Glad to be part of the family. Join the family and try this place immediately!
Very interesting and dynamic location. If you are interested in a family run diner with chef prepared meals, in a unique location, this is it! The entrance is across a lumber yard from the train tracks that you park beside. Seems crazy, but the diner is up an old staircase and the floor is uneven and rustic. They have a waiting list system that will text you when your table is ready. It’s worth the wait! We had a wonderful breakfast and the service is wonderful.
Warm your belly and your hearts with Northern Cafe's food and amazing service. We were fortunate to be first round visitors arriving at 8:08am on a Saturday (long weekend) Parking was easy, and we followed a few people through the chainlink fence gate towards the creaky stairs. We were greeted by each front of house staffer - everyone was so kind! We had their cheese omelet, french toast platter, pancake platter, and eggs benny, and an order of their gyoza & ofc coffee. Prices are reasonable (in this economy) and meals are well seasoned and beyond hearty. The gyoza: savory, gingery porky goodness esp with a touch of soy & the in house chili sauce. I can see why its a must. Even at 8am. But where this cafe shines most is with their customer service. Our coffee mugs were never cold, our omlette order was easily accommodated (add onion & peppers), and smiles were given away freely everywhere you turn. A very nice Sr staffer greeted us and chatted a bit at our table and really all of our servers were genuinely kind and friendly. Happy Thanksgiving to the hardworking crew at this tucked away gem of a café.
