I recently took my dog to OakVet for TPLO surgery. While the medical outcome appears successful, I have significant concerns regarding their billing transparency and animal handling protocols. Regarding the costs, I accept my own error in not scrutinizing every line of the $13,665.30 estimate prior to signing. However, it is frustrating that the staff never disclosed that the mandatory 6-week and 10-week follow-up X-rays would be additional out-of-pocket costs. When a client pays thousands of dolalrs for a major procedure, it is reasonable to expect that standard, required post-operative checks are either included in the package or explicitly verbally disclosed as separate liabilities. Future clients should be aware that the initial massive bill is not the final cost. Furthermore, I was disappointed by their handling protocols. First, they remove pets to a back room for examinations rather than conducting them in the exam room with the pet parent present; this lack of visibility is concerning. I imagine this space to be crowded with every other animal and a high-stress inducing environment. Second, despite my bringing my dog in his harness and leash every time, they used their own slip leads (which function mechanically as choke collars). This contradicts modern veterinary best practices, as slip leads can compress the airway and trachea, especially in a stressed animal. A specialty veterinary hospital should prioritize safe handling practices (such as using the owner's harness and leash) rather than utilizing convenient tools known to cause potential harm.

I had such a great experience here with my French Bulldog. I had decided to go forward with the BOAS surgery for my little guy since he was really struggling with his breathing, the heat, and exercising. I had had another consult with a surgeon down in Los Altos which didn't go well. He was obtuse and rude and I didn't trust him for a second to take care of my dog. So I scheduled another consultation with a different vet.I had read that Iron Horse Vet Care in Dublin offered BOAS surgery so I arranged an appointment. I met with Dr. Haburjak. He spent a lot of time with me asking pointed questions about my concerns and explaining the BOAS procedure in great detail, from surgical process to risks/complications to benefits. I was convinced after this visit that it was the right thing to do for my little guy despite the risks. When I learned that they had another surgery location in Oakland, I opted to go there because it was 10 minutes from my home. My surgeon for the procedure was Dr. Wignall and he was phenomenal! He explained the procedure prior to beginning and called me right afterwards with post-op reports. I cannot say enough how grateful I am to this team of excellent surgeons and vet techs that took such great care of my fur baby. We are now 6 weeks post op and he is doing AMAZING in all areas of his life: breathing normally, can exercise normally, and a big bonus: much less snoring! Thank you Oakvet and Ironhorse Vet for setting us up for success! I highly recommend either location to take incredible care of your fur babies.

I had to bring our cat in for an emergency to remove something he swallowed on a Sat morning. OakVet immediately took us in and had such caring staff. The location is very secure with parking. I felt like we had the best care ever and they are very responsive and fast. Our cat had to get an endoscopy to have it removed when vomiting couldn’t happen. They are very transparent with fees and payment. Luckily I was able to pay for the procedure but if you are going to have pets, one should definitely consider pet insurance since any pet visits are always expensive and work can only be done if you can pay for it upfront. Again, our family is lucky we are able to do what we can for our furry family members. But I have to do a SHOUT OUT to everyone at OakVet Animal Services! Best care ever! From the front desk staff , to the back: Wen, Holly, Allie, J…who did the billing, Dr. Josh and esp Dr Silvia who performed the endoscopy!

My vet recommended I take my senior dog, Molly, to see Dr. Sylvia Funes. Molly was diagnosed with Cushing's disease and one of Dr. Funes areas of expertise is endocrine disorders. We found Dr. Funes to be extremely knowledgable and upfront about Molly's prognosis. Her Cushing's is caused by bilateral tumors on her adrenal glands, probably cancerous. Dr. Funes started her on Vetoryl and has consistently emailed me, checking on her condition and reaction to the medication. I am very pleased with all the interactions we have had with staff at Oakvet. I highly recommend this clinic and Dr. Funes.
