It has been about a year and a half since my last visit, and unfortunately this experience was really disappointing. I used to frequent here regularly, but It’s extremely clear that the restaurant is now poorly managed. Even with a confirmed reservation, we were forced to wait over 20 minutes because the restaurant was severely overbooked. Several parties were affected by this as well, so this was clearly not an isolated issue. The hostesses and servers, while nice, were unprofessional, disorganized, and gossipy. If i have to wait for a table in a cramped corner at a “nice” restaurant I don’t really want to listen to a bunch of teenagers gossip about their day to day lives loudly. The dress code here was also very strange, I’ve never been to a sushi restaurant where the hostesses were wearing athletic clothes and leggings, it’s very out of place. The overall vibe of the staff really just felt more like a group of college-age kids going through the motions. Usually I’m not a big stickler on these things, but if I’m paying higher prices I expect a little more. The food itself was extremely underwhelming. The sushi and other dishes lacked depth and flavor, with most items tasting extremely bland. Any flavor that was present came almost entirely from sauces that were either overwhelmingly sweet or overly salty, which ended up masking rather than enhancing the food. Nothing justified the price point. The atmosphere further detracted from the experience. The music was loud, poorly curated, and completely out of place. It genuinely felt like I was eating at a forever 21 in a rundown mall. Not sure who decided that playlist was appropriate. For a $200 dinner for two, I really expect far more in terms of service, food quality, and ambiance. My previous visits weren’t nearly this disappointing, so something has clearly changed. Whether it’s new management, lack of training, or poor oversight, the decline is noticeable. I wouldn’t consider returning unless there are major improvements across the board, especially in staff professionalism, food execution, and overall atmosphere. I’ve been to a lot of sushi restaurants in the Austin area and honestly this is one of the worst when considering the quality, experience, and price. 1 star.
I visited RA Sushi last night after a long day of work. I’m grateful that they are one of the few restaurants downtown that stay open until 12 am. Not only were they open when I came in late at night, I loved how they lite up my sushi with fire and served it. Their gyozas are probably the best that I have so far tried in Austin. They are light and not too crispy, but super tasteful. The interior there has always been absolutely beautiful. I remember going there on a date one time and it was so busy, but yesterday I went thereby myself-it was such a nice and quiet setting. I highly recommend.
The food was good. I can recommend happy hour. The views are great too. However, we ordered 2 sushi rolls at first which arrived in about ~12 minutes. Then we ordered shrimp tempura roll and were waiting for more than ~20 minutes. I asked our waitress to cancel it for us because of the wait. Also, the host at the entrance greeted us okay and gave us a table, but I asked our waitress if we can change tables she said yes and we moved to a different one. Maybe 10 minutes later the host was sitting people outside, he noticed us that we moved, and I saw him looking at us and shaking his head left and right like it was unacceptable.
I had a really impressive meal here. Prices were just right, service was really great, food was really good, and I was stuffed by the end. I had the chicken Bento box off the lunch menu. I had many questions, and felt very comfortable ordering despite not really knowing what it was before asking. They are on the 2nd floor and have a very nice open balcony you can eat on, with great view of the surrounding buildings, street, etc. Edit: the pic I shared already had a few bites out of it. Couldn't help it, lol
We couldn’t leave Austin without one more stop at RA Sushi Bar Restaurant! Nick and his team knocked it out of the park again—the sushi was not only beautifully presented but absolutely mouthwatering. Truly an unforgettable experience every time!
