From Texas - Solid No Gi…reached out before my visit to inquire what I needed to be prepared for. Received a very timely reply from the owner Prof Alex advising “you are welcome here” with a few specifics. Showed up and the gym was open 20 minutes ahead of class time at 6am…had about 7-8 bodies for the morning crew (young bendies to mature heavies) and we stayed busy with warm up drills, instruction, then positional rounds all related to the lesson plan. I received detailed instruction for the technique we were working that is something I’ll be working into my game for sure. Very clean, timely, well structured class, and I’m leaving a fan that will be back whenever we’re visiting family out here. Thank you!
Business practices are "slightly shady", not atypical for a BJJ gym though. Don't do the "free" 6 weeks, not a good value for $500 especially if you are required to do an annual membership afterwards. Bad business defaults, but again quite common in BJJ schools, although you'd like to see better rather than sticking into tradition. In terms of the classes themselves, this is why my rating is 2/5. I love doing some kind of live work. Their mixed classes do way too little. I went quite a few (no-gi) classes where none was done because there wasn't enough time. Which is a shame because there is more and more research showing that live representative environments are how you gain skill effectively. It's old school, you learn some technique, drill it on an opponent that is in massive quotes "resisting", then there is a 40% chance you have time to do >10 mins of live work which likely has no relation to the technique you learned. If you like no-gi there are only 2-3 good people consistently at the classes. There were some good classes, but I can't go to a gym where it isn't 80%+ of classes are majority some level of live work, positional sparring, CLA/Eco, etc. If you want a lot of very good bodies to work with for no-gi and to get better faster, there are better gyms at the same price or near it.
Great experience. The community is extremely supportive the coaches give clear and focused instruction. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to give BJJ a try.
I did the six week warrior challenge and it was great! The classes were not only fun but also challenging in the best way possible. The instructors are knowledgeable and super supportive, making everyone feel welcome, regardless of skill level. I loved learning new techniques and pushing myself physically while also building confidence. The sense of community is amazing, and I made some great friends along the way. I highly recommend Ares East Mesa for anyone looking to try something new or get into shape—I'll definitely be back for more! 🥋💪✨
Amazing instructors and team! The gym is always clean and Alex is one of the best competitors who can actually teach and coach. Come by and join the best BJJ team around. AEM offers many variety of class times with amazing instructors that fit all types of personal schedules, so you do not have any excuses to not train.
