After several good experiences with Broad Street Auto & Tire, I’m disappointed to say I’m back on my search to find a repair shop in RVA that’s transparent, reliable, and always treats all customers with high levels of consideration and respect. I brought my car in for a state inspection two weeks ago and waited in the office for about an hour and a half. A man at the front desk (I didn’t catch his name) eventually told me my car would not pass inspection and that he didn’t have time to go into details. My car is older and has high mileage, so I expected that some work might be needed. I asked if he could at least give me a brief overview of what might be wrong or what would need to be checked or repaired in order to pass inspection. He repeatedly said he didn’t have time. While I understand they may not have had time to do the repairs that day, I found it frustrating that he wouldn’t offer even a high-level explanation—especially given that he had a full page of notes about my car sitting right in front of him. I even would have been willing to pay for a diagnostic explanation, but there was no flexibility or effort to communicate. I considered coming back for a follow-up appointment thinking maybe it was just an off day, but the lack of transparency and communication caused me to lose trust in this shop. If you’re younger or appear less knowledgeable about cars, I’d be cautious bringing your vehicle here.
This is my family’s new go-to spot for auto care. Broad Street Auto & Tire always did such a good job on our vehicles. Great mechanics and quality customer service. We’ll take all 3 of our cars there.
I had a very disappointing experience with Broad Street Auto. I asked them to reattach a piece of trim on my car, and the owner later said the work was complete and the car was ready for pickup. After I paid the bill — which also included charges for new filter installations — I went outside and found that the trim was still sitting on my front seat and hadn’t been attached at all. I went back inside and asked why I had been told the job was done when it clearly wasn’t. The owner simply said she was “sorry,” but didn’t offer any real explanation. I also asked for a correction to the bill because they charged $70 for a “diagnostic” related to the trim. I did ask them to briefly look over the fluids and let me know if the car needed anything, but the owner claimed that alone justified the $70. In my experience with auto shops, a quick fluid check is usually a courtesy, not a standalone diagnostic charge — especially when the main repair I brought the car in for wasn’t completed. Overall, I left paying for work that wasn’t done and a fee that didn’t feel justified. Based on how this was handled, I cannot recommend this shop.
These guys are the best! I had an emergency situation and had to get towed to somewhere near by and ended up here. That was 2 years ago and they've done nothing but amazing work for me since on two different Subaru Foresters. The prices are fair, they're clear about what is necessary, and they're so incredibly nice. Bonus that there is often a pup in the shop which makes me smile every time!
I have been a loyal customer at Broad St for around 2 years. I'd recently been hearing some unusual sounds while driving, as well as strong vibrations while idling in D, assumed a transmission issue (at least) & have had some mount problems in the past. I brought the car in. They replaced an engine mount claiming it was broken (I'm not so sure, but I didn't ask to see it because this is a place I generally trust), and mentioned that a transmission mount could also need replacing if I'm still having issues. Now, I'll give them points for the transmission mount callout, but upon retrieving my vehicle, all of the issues I had described had not improved whatsoever. ~$400 later. In fact, they continued to get worse. I mentioned these problems, and scheduled a new appointment. At some point, Alice mentioned that the tech could not identify/reproduce the issue I was describing. I'm not sure how that could be the case for any professional in this business who got inside that car. When I got there, Alice went to get the technician from the back so we could talk about it. Through the glass, I saw him do a finger-gun-to-the-head motion. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I bring my car to the shop to fix problems, not replace parts (unless they fix the problems...). He seemed someone inexperienced, and even recommended I take it to a dealership. And sent me on my way. So, I took the car to my other shop. Turns out, I had some issues with shocks/struts, causing cupping in my tires, and the transmission mount was the primary issue. This second shop had multiple technicians identify multiple sounds caused by different issues with different parts. One shock was in dire need of replacing, another engine mount (put in by Broad St. around a year ago) was broken (they showed it to me), and the transmission mount. $1,800 later, the car is in perfect working order and sounds better than it ever has since I've owned it. I'm sorry Alice, I have always appreciated your demeanor, responsiveness, and attitude. I will no longer be a customer here. Their patience, attention to detail, and thoroughness seems to have degraded in recent months. I would recommend you either fire or seriously reevaluate the technician that worked on my car. I would not recommend this shop at this time.
