This is just a great little gourmet store with a nice wine selection and unique food items at reasonable prices. The guys who work behind the deli counter are masters of their craft! Love to come here for fondu cheeses.
Nice spot for gourmet food, wine, and booze. Whisk(e)y here ranged from standard stuff to good regional bottles (Sagamore Spirits Cask Strength), unusual items (Jimmy Red Dsicovery Box Set, Indri Trini, Hakushu, BT Kosher Rye), and allocated bourbons (Eagle Rare, Blanton's, etc., at "DC prices", but not too egregious). The core selection of bourbon, rye, and scotch is well thought-out and very good at various price ranges (that is to say, you can spend as much as you want but you don't have to). Helpful and courteous staff combined with good food pairings make this a fun and unique place to shop.
This was a very unfortunate experience at Calvert Woodley. I was there yesterday for the first time further to watching a review on social media. The store is actually great and has an extensive selection of wine and cheeses that I cannot find easily in the metro area. The cheese guy with the beard was so dismissive and rude that I left the store without purchasing all the items that I wanted. It was a very uncomfortable encounter as I barely got a chance to ask any question or made the request for the items that I wanted. The owners need to do review their customer service best practices with their employees because this seems to be a common occurrence that they is not actively trying to remediate. I definitely would encourage the public to keep far away from cheese counter.
We recently moved back to Van Ness and it's been great to be near Calvert Woodley once again. The wine selection is excellent. We previously lived in NorCal and have become quite spoiled for wine, but I have no issue finding great stuff here. I in particular enjoy the wine advocate scores which are prominently displayed throughout the store. At other establishments I'm usually standing around awkwardly googling! The staff are quite nice also. It's just a great location institution.
I stopped by this liquor store in DC and had a really good experience. The selection is impressive — from local craft beers and wines to a wide range of spirits, including some hard-to-find labels. The prices felt fair compared to other shops in the area, and they often have good deals if you keep an eye out. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable; they didn’t just point me to the aisle but actually suggested options based on what I was looking for. The store is well-organized and clean, making it easy to find what you need quickly. Parking can be a little tight, but it’s worth it for the selection and service. Overall, it’s one of the better liquor stores I’ve visited in DC — reliable, well-stocked, and customer-focused
