This just might become my new favorite Mexican restaurant. The staff was friendly, greeted and seated us right away. Good menu selection of all the Mexican staples. My choice vasilated between the birria and the el pastor. I choose the birria and it was moist, authentic and so delish. They even dipped and cooked the corn tortilla shell. They were able to handle a large group and families at the same time. This place is the real deal authentic Mexican cuisine. One of Calgary's best kept secrets.
Honest review: The atmosphere was okay. The large vent above the bar in the dining room, needs to be cleaned, it is covered with thick gray dust/dirt. I hope this is no indication of the cleanliness of the rest of the restaurant. Service was pretty good. Food was terrible. Ordered a chicken chimichanga. These are supposed to be deep fried but instead it appeared to be cooked on a grill with burnt cheese. The chicken was scarce, it appeared and tasted like canned chicken. The chimichanga was mush. It consisted of just refried beans with maybe a couple of spoonfuls of chicken. When I tried cutting a piece off, the inside just squished out. Will not be going back and will not recommend to others.
Dinner date This is a neat restaurant & love the decore. Ordered chips & salsa to start, then the 3 meat taco combo. Tacos were well seasoned, flavourful & not overly salty…. & they were served hot (This seem to be a difficult task for some restaurants). My husband was impressed also as the Tacos were warm enough for his standards. Would come to this restaurant again!
We were quite excited to have stumbled upon this place! Normally when we go to Mexican joints, we find they’re overly Americanized and/or somewhat Tex mex. This place tasted authentic. Flavours were all these, and care was obviously put into all the food. Based on other reviews, we tried the nachos - they don’t look particularly special, but was somehow the best nachos we’ve had in Calgary. Tacos were also flavourful and hit the spot. I’d say the quality here is on par with tacos memorial - our other go-to spot in Calgary for tacos.

From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the colorful decor and cozy vibe—it really captures the essence of Mexico, even though you're miles away. The tacos were absolutely amazing—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Every bite tasted like it was made with love. You can tell they use quality ingredients, and the flavors are as close to Mexico as it gets outside of the country. Whether you're into classic tacos or more creative options, there's something for everyone on the menu. The drinks were also top-notch—refreshing, well-balanced, and a great complement to the food. It’s the kind of place where you want to take your time, enjoy the music, and soak in the experience. Casa Catrina offers a true Mexican experience—delicious food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere. If you're in the area, do not miss this place. We’ll definitely be coming back!
