TLDR: unsanitary fish, sloppy rolls, rude customer service. REVIEW: I’ve been to Geta probably 10 times in recent years, but after my recent experience will not go back. My group showed up at opening time to eat but they told us to wait 15 more minutes because their delivery was late that morning and they were still getting things prepared. After 15 minutes we went in. We were largely ignored. After an exasperated waiter took our order, no water was brought until we asked. Our order was not taken until we hailed the water down. Eventually, the food that was delivered to our table was inedible. The rolls were SO SLOPPY, falling apart and oozing with mayo. The fish in our rolls and the sashimi tasted spoiled or like it had been cut on a dirty cutting board — the fish had a stale odor and taste. Simply disgusting and extremely poor quality... not what I used to think about the food here. We didn’t finish any dishes and left quickly thereafter.
Save your money. Honestly probably the worst sushi I’ve had. Staff wasn’t super friendly either. Not sure how it got so many positive reviews. Rice didnt even taste like sushi rice. Go see for yourself but may be wise to have a backup food plan.
Small place, attentive staff, amazing sushi. - Their rolls are stuffed to the brim with sushi. - The salmon sashimi is a large portion, and super good. - We also tried their Geta don. The tuna was amazing!! The onsen egg was really great!!! I loved the spicy scallop roll. My friends really enjoyed the real cali roll. The hamachi roll was great too. My only complaint is that the rice consistency wasn’t great and seemed basically unseasoned.
Been here 2x now (dinner about 10days ago and lunch today) and finally writing a review. BEST family/small sushi restaurant probably in the surrounding zip codes! We usually go to RnR Sushi a few minutes away, but after trying Geta, RnR is a backup now :) Geta isn't big (a little more than 20 seats), so if you arrive at peak mealtimes, expect a wait for a seat (this place is popular & you'll see lots of takeout orders being picked up too). On Xmas eve (today), we came at 130pm for a late lunch b4 they close at 2pm, and we got the last 2 seats at the sushi bar (they place was still full when we left at 2pm). I went with a friend who doesn't eat much raw fish (he likes only raw tuna, otherwise he says it's too 'fishy'), and a friend who has been to some VERY nice/expensive Japanese restaurant/sushi places, and they BOTH like Geta and want to come back! That says a lot! We all thought the prices are reasonable given the portion size preparation, and freshness. We def like that they call their CA rolls "real CA roll" because they use real crab, not imitation crab meat. The avocado tuna roll was delicious - generous amount of tuna. The tempura was great - came out hot and crispy, the batter thin (not thick or gummy). The Agedashi Tofu appetizer was so melt in your mouth good - soft fluffy tofu with a thin crispy shell in a light sweet soy sauce (one of the best agedashi tofu I've had in the Bay Area), and I finally tried monkfish liver! Def ck out Geta if you're in the area :) Attentive, helpful, and friendly staff. Lots of specials - look at the various postings on the wall after you're seated!
This is so small sushi place with only few tables set up, so don't expect to get in so easily! But the food is so good, the fish is so fresh and everything is authentic and of high quality. It's my favorite! If you order the sweet shrimp sushi you also get the head as tempura! Gyudon was a bit too big even if shared between 2 people but we also ordered many things so that might be more of the reason.
