What's better than a great breakfast, and Grain Store is a standout in Melbourne. Consistently superb, this place is all class without being pretentious. A foodie's haunt but accessible and welcoming. Grain Store gives you the vibe that these folk love what they do, be it the food, coffee or customer engagement. I'd suggest there's something for everyone's tastes and food requirements. Often there's new menu options. Grain Store, keep doing what you're doing. You're a credit to those who run the place, those who work there and to epicurean Melbourne.
I ordered the Eggs Benedict and it was very tasty with well-balanced flavours. Proportion was just right for me. I also ordered an iced coffee, which was refreshing and revitalising after being stuck in a very hot stuffy office for my morning! The service was prompt and friendly and our water glasses were refilled without us needing to ask. The toilets are shared with other businesses in the building and located just around the corner accessed from the foyer area.
Nice café with a great atmosphere and friendly service. The space is well designed and comfortable, making it a pleasant place to sit and relax. The food is nicely presented, though the flavours are quite simple and didn’t stand out much. Coffee was smooth and easy to drink. Overall, a good spot for the ambience and service, with room for improvement on the food side.
There was a queue to get into this restaurant so we thought this must be that restaurant that will make us go "wow". That was, perhaps, the wrong assumption (atleast, the way it turned out for us). Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes. Don't know. It was Smoked Salmon on Waffle and Barramundi on some saffron infused potatoes. Sounds exciting, right? The waffle was soft like a napkin. When we asked about it to the waitress, she was like "thats how it's supposed to be". Well then we must've eaten in places that made them crispy by mistake. The Barramundi on the saffron infused potato was another level altogether! One bite into the shrimp in sauce which was on the saffron potatoes created an infusion which is difficult to explain in words. It was like someone put some naphthalene balls in the food. Later we guessed it must've been the saffron. Too much Saffron to be exact, which gave the dish that chemical taste. Our palates just couldn't take it. May need to tweek this combination. We ordered the waffles with strawberries, candied banana and chocolate ice cream, hoping it will get rid of the naphthalene taste in our mouth and also get to eat some crunchy waffle. Wrong again. The waffles were not crispy again. When asked, they said they were pre-made waffles. Our bill was $115. We have eaten better meals for far less!! Anyways, hope these remarks will be taken constructively, rather than as criticism. All the best!!
Head to the Grain Store for a not-so-usual breakfast. An Asian twist on some of the menu items is a welcome change to the standard egg offering. If anything, they can probably afford to take one thing off the plate for the more elaborate dishes. Coffee is reliably good and the cafe has a lovely, warm casual feel. Get the side of mushrooms because they’re magically moreish.
