A $16,000 replacement was recommended for what turned out to be a $100 fix. We contacted H. Jack’s for intermittent boiler ignition issues during a cold snap. We paid approximately $1,200 in diagnostics, labor, and parts. This included a $165 diagnostic fee, a $317 charge to “restore heat for the night,” and an additional $751 to return and “fix” the same issue, plus cleaning/servicing the boiler. Despite this, the problem was not resolved and returned within a week. When they came back, no meaningful re-diagnosis was attempted. The visit consisted largely of explaining that the boiler was “old,” that intermittent issues are “hard to pinpoint,” and shifting immediately to upselling a $16,000 combo boiler + water heater replacement (despite us never having any issues with the water heater). When we asked whether additional components could be tested, such as the control module or wiring, this was brushed off as "you can spend money on replacing parts, or you can put that money toward a new boiler." After this, my partner independently replaced the control module (a ~$100 part) and corrected wiring that appears to have been improperly configured. Since then, our 25-year-old boiler has been running better than ever: immediate ignition, no lag, and even heating between floors, even in the middle of a brutal Cleveland winter. It’s extremely disappointing that the root cause was missed after paying a hefty diagnostic fee, and that we were charged multiple times for unsuccessful attempts on the same issue. It was especially frustrating that replacement was recommended instead of completing the diagnostics we already paid for, when a simple and inexpensive fix was ultimately the solution. I strongly caution homeowners with older systems to seek a second opinion before agreeing to major repairs or replacement recommendations. This experience felt far more focused on upselling than on thorough troubleshooting.
Jeff and Kevin came out to clean out a blockage causing water from kitchen sink to overflow and leak out of the floor drain in my basement. As well as install a new trap and vent underneath my kitchen sink. Jeff explained everything to me in an easy to understand way and was a pleasure to talk with. Extremely happy with the finished product and results.
Kevin was awesome. He did an excellent job explaining the work that needed to be done to replace our dead furnace. He helped us understand the best type of replacement furnace for our home and walked us through the financing. He followed up on everything he said he'd do. His work was very clean, and he explained the correct operation and maintenance of the system. His customer service quality was so refreshing. I'd highly recommend HJacks, and especially Kevin.
Ezekiel and Jeff did a fantastic job putting in our new hot water tank. They were very respectful of our home, as they covered their shoes and the carpet leading to the area of the water tank. They were also punctual with the time that they said they would arrive. I highly recommend H. Jack’s Plumbing and Heating!
