As we wrapped up our winery tour for the day, we made one last stop here just before closing and were so glad we did. What a great way to end the day. The variety of wines was impressive, and even in the cooler season, the grounds clearly have so much character. This is absolutely a place we’ll be coming back to when the warmer months roll around. Inside, though, the space was warm, welcoming, and cozy, with a perfect little nook where we could settle in and enjoy our pours. The staff was a real highlight, friendly, engaging, and genuinely passionate about what they’re doing. And it certainly didn’t hurt discovering a shared passion for social work with the person pouring our wine, which made the experience even more memorable. Fantastic wines, great energy, and a wonderful final stop for the day. Looking forward to coming back when the weather’s warmer. Keep up the great pours.
We were really excited to try James River Cellars Winery mainly because it was just down the street from my friend’s house, and two because the videos and photos we saw online made it look like a great spot. What we were most looking forward to was the wine flights. When we arrived, the person at the entrance was super friendly and asked what we were looking for since there was an event happening that day. He pointed us in the direction of where to order drinks and mentioned that someone would walk us through the wines as we selected them. Each flight includes four different wines, but once we got up to order, we quickly realized we weren’t going to get the full tasting experience. Since it was a Friday, flights were served in plastic containers instead of glass. When we asked why, the man helping us said, “Are you kidding me? There’s 300 people out there.” I assume this meant they didn’t have enough glassware for the crowd or couldn’t keep up with washing them. They do give you a single glass you can pour your samples into, if you prefer drinking from glass. We were handed a list of wines to choose from, but unless we asked specific questions, we weren’t offered any information or recommendations. I don’t know much about wine, but I do know I like sweet ones so I chose the four that were marked as sweet. Seating is first come, first served, and there was live music playing, which was a nice touch. That said, we weren’t sure where the “300 people” were, as it didn’t feel particularly crowded. One downside was the flies that were really annoying, which made it hard to relax and enjoy our drinks. We ended up leaving shortly after finishing our wines. There were a lot of dogs around maybe part of the event, though we weren’t sure. Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience, but it didn’t live up to the hype or the pictures we’d seen. If you’re looking for a more traditional wine tasting with glass flights and staff guidance, I’d recommend going on a different day or calling ahead to find out what to expect.
Very friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. With the staff's help we picked out a white wine flight and a red wine flight. All of the wines were tasty and we discovered that all of the grapes for the wine are grown in Virginia. They also has lovely on-site events. The next time we are in the area we will be back.
Thank you James River Cellars!! ❤️ We had a group tasting reservation to celebrate our daughter’s birthday. After the tasting her boyfriend proposed. From the first phone call I made to the winery requesting information, to the day we had the tasting, service was fantastic! Amanda, Sean, Katherine, Bobby and all the staff there went above and beyond to make sure our time at the winery was memorable. They helped us set up for the proposal without making us feel that we were asking for to much. The staff, the wine, the environment, the music, the facilities ALL make the cellar a place to have your event and make it an unforgettable one, or just to seat and relax sipping some wine listening to the music. Stop by and visit, you will have an amazing time. Thank you JRC!
Great little winery smacked right in the middle of Glen Allen. You might miss it rolling down Rt 1, but look for the driving range and you'll see a nice house, up on the hill and there it is. Even where it's located it's pretty scenic and you can get some nice Sunset views. They have a large patio on the side with firepit tables. Out back there is a very large covered Pavilion for larger events. We have been coming here for years and have attended a bunch a different events here through the years. We have been members on and off through the years as well. Have always enjoyed their wine, they do have a couple that stand out over the others, but that is always personal preference. The staff is wonderful, informative and helpful. They have added onto the house over the years, so now they even have a larger upstairs. Lots of room for tastings and to wander about inside, Looking at wine and gifts. If you haven't check James River out yet, you should, I'm sure you'll find it's a great place to get your winery fix right in your backyard.
