Five bright, shining stars all around! We were flying in from Kauai and our flight was delayed TWICE, and it was our last night on Oahu, so we were so grateful that the receptionists were flexible in pushing our dinner reservation back. Upon entering, there is a huge display of Japanese whiskeys. We were promptly seated, and I ordered the $85 Teppan and my BF ordered the $125 steak & lobster. Both meals include panko shrimp, veggies, and salmon. To our surprise, a tasting plate of thin roast beef slices and cheese was brought along with salads. Our entire meal was so flavorful that I did not add any shoyu or dip into the roasted garlic sauce. Also, the garlic fried rice with bits of egg and bacon was tasty all on its own. We both selected the 5 oz. Washu filets, and we were beyond satisfied. The grill master never once rushed us even though we were the last patrons of the night. The restaurant is divided into two elegant rooms: teppanyaki and sushi/sashimi.
Restaurant Suntory is such a special place. It doesn't just feel like a restaurant in a mall; it feels like a genuine portal to Tokyo right in the heart of Waikiki. Since their 2021 renovation, they’ve really leaned into that sense of "escape." The aged wooden panels, meant to evoke Suntory’s whisky barrels, and the quiet, minimalist design that’s does a great job of blocking out the bustle of Kalākaua Avenue. If you are planning to share this gem with friends soon, here are a few ways to make the most of that "authentic Japan" mission: 😍The Three Experiences The beauty of Suntory is that it’s actually three distinct restaurants in one, depending on the vibe your friends are looking for: • Sushi Tokiwa: For the ultimate "closer to Japan" feeling, this is their intimate, 9-seat omakase counter. It’s very traditional and secluded. Reserve early! • The Teppanyaki Room: Great for a group. It’s more social but maintains that high-level omotenashi that Suntory is known for. • The Washoku Room: Perfect for a quiet lunch or dinner. Their Shunsaizen changes monthly and is one of the most authentic kaiseki-style values in Honolulu. Pro-Tips for your Next Visit • Whisky Flights: Since you’re at a Suntory-owned establishment, take advantage of the rare pours. It’s one of the best places to find Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu. • The Oxtail Kamameshi: If you’re dining in the Washoku room, this iron-pot rice dish is a fan favorite that perfectly blends Japanese technique with local ingredients. • Validation: If you're driving, don't forget they validate for the Royal Hawaiian Center.
New year celebration in a private room of the restaurant if the room is available and the food cost is minimum $500. Very good service by the waitress. We chose the set menu as it has pretty much items that we would like to try. It turned out we made a good choice with delicious dishes. As it was a birthday of one member, the restaurant did surprise us with a candle dessert and a small bouquet.
I loved the vibe of the restaurant. Minimalist and classy. Overall, the meal was delicious! I had the chef's recommended course and could really taste the quality in the fish. Cocktails were amazing too. They have a wide selection of Japanese whiskey. The only thing off was, I ordered a freshly squeezed juice and was given a juicer to squeeze it myself. For $12, that was not worth it.
We had a great night! We loved our meal - the strip steak I think -which was $60 roughly. It came with rice, miso soup and breaded prawns cooked on the grill… drinks were fairly priced…we were the only westerners there. I think more westerners need to see the prices and not get caught up in the $240 wagyu menu… this was the teppanyaki room where they cook in front of you. Delicious and cheaper than a steak at some restaurants
