I had a therapist who was good at one point, but she graduated from her program. The second one that I had blatantly lied about being an actress to my face and the third one literally aggressively bullied me repeatedly, making me feel bad about myself. Take your risks here.
After losing my income, I ended up on Medi-Cal and had no choice but to find a new therapist. This was the seventh program I tried after being denied a single case agreement from LA Care—and it was by far the worst. I told them exactly what I needed: a long-term therapist, one consistent LMFT, someone experienced who could actually handle trauma. What did they do? They threw me with an intern, forced me to sit through a session, and then, in the second session, she told me she was quitting and I’d be reassigned. And guess what? No one ever contacted me again. Despite promises, I was left completely on my own, after sharing my deepest traumas with someone I would never see again. That’s not a mistake—that’s cruelty. This program doesn’t care about you. They care about billing LA Care and giving interns hours. If you are struggling, do not go here. You will be tossed around, ignored, and treated like a dollar sign. Southern California Counseling Program exists for their convenience, not yours.
My experience with these guys is another story, they are racist, biased, and hypocritical. They want people to respect everyone’s ideas and beliefs except the ones that don’t align with the status quo. I am being discriminated against for my beliefs and my questions to increase my cultural competence. Bias and racism comes in all shades. And these guys perpetuate it in their training and allow against individuals that don’t agree with them 😭😡😡
I really adore this counseling center. I admire the therapists they train and the supervisors that educate and support. I am currently seeing a wonderful therapist, Lou, at this counseling center and I just adore him. The amount of compassion and insight he brings to our sessions together is so appreciated. This sliding scale practice has been my saving grace. The wait is worth it and if you're willing to do the work, they will absolutely help you reach a place of mental wellness that best serves you.
I can see this place being very helpful for a lot of people. And also not being the right place for some others with certain diagnoses. The front desk was very pleasant and always welcoming. My therapist was so sweet and caring. She also asked the right questions that gave me a lot of insight. At a very low point in my life she was the only person I trusted. I give this place a 3 star rating because my therapist had finished her time there the next week after I told her my newly learned diagnoses. I had been asking for months about certain type of therapy which I never got. The clinical supervisors failed to provide me with any recommendation, information, support, resources, nothing. When I mentioned that I just didn’t want to go to therapy anymore they asked me to sing some papers and on my way I went.
